Was just thinking over the weekend (damn Bankhoilidays!) how does the 20vt engine respond to traditional tuning methods? - eg cams and head work? everyone seems to go for rechips (which is obviously easier) but could you get almighty results from other means?

Headwork is less significant on turbo'd motors as the losses are small when your shoving it in there. The 20VT head is an excellent flowing design anyway. (later 20VT heads are small port so could well benefit from larger porting on the inlet side though IMHO)

A cam swap can yield some good power, but this is again probably worth doing as part of a larger turbo upgrade as the power will likely be pushed and opened up in the higher rpms, where gasflow is likely compromised as standard.
20VT's beign breathless are more likely a function of K03 and exhaust manifold dimensions than of the heads ability to breathe.

So for exhausts what is best without turbo upgrade, as i think i read elsewhere that will mean clutch upgrade and injectors aswell.

Is a 4" back box going to help any?

or the likes of a 3" downpipe better,

and at the extreme a full exhaust system without the decat option (keeping it emissions friendly)

What exhausts are best for the Leon cupra?

As you will guess i am a bit clueless on these things, hopefully not just bombed your thread!!

Bill do you know if the 20v heads flow better as standard than the ABF 16v, is it worth swapping? for a normally aspired car?

Exhaust change prompting clutch and injectors?
How many bhp do you have in mind to require all these other mods? 300bhp + then yes, but not if less than that.

Larger downpipe and cat should help especially if running higher than stock boost.

Not that much, thats what i was getting at - how much can you do before needing these sort of upgrades? Surely if you chip it, full decat, induction, turbo upgrade then you would be well over the standard clutch capabilities to cope with the power (meaning clutch slip) plus any other parts that would need upgraded internally to cope - injectors?, cam?, rods? i dont know what is required. :-)
