View Full Version : Alpin TDi boost
Has any one any knowledge/experience of the Alpin device that plugs in line to the ECU in TDi's ??
They claim to get 140bhp from a 110 and an increase of 25% in torque.
I have seen it for 350 + vat and is supposed to be self installable??
I think these are fairly popular - just a list of tables that 'bluffs' the ECU
the price is right - and I recognise the name - plus it's nice & easy to pull out come service time
One of the guys at work has one in his 530D - it's getting on for being stupidly fast now - so much torque that when he accelerates in kick down in the wet - the yellow TCS light stays on until he's past 80...

Langers has done a report of the "Hermann" tuning box in the TDI section.
Same concept - slightly cheaper than this one though.
They basically "intercept" the signal from ECU to injectors and lengthen the fuel injection pulse. This provides passive boost increase too.
Thanks -- the big question is whether it is better to go for one of
these gadgets, or, a new chip re-map ???
For what it's worth:-
Both apparently give simiar full throttle results, but part-throttle can be "lumpy" with tuningbox.
Full remap allows you to alter the timing of the fuel pulse (advnace it slightly) as well as the duration, and to "request" a higher boost from the turbo. Overfuelling via tuningbox will indirectly lead to more boost, but without the same level of control.
I've heard comments that remapping allows piston temperatures to be better controlled than tuning-box, but not seen any great evidence for this......
Summary ~ remap almost certainly the betterr, but not easily removed.
A collegue of me has installed one a few weeks ago in his Ibiza TDI 110HP. Being used to a C4, I must say it still impressed me a lot. Nice smooth torque, no weird dips, and it makes the car quite fast in acceleration! Fast enough to waste some GTI's. Not sure whether it indeed has 140 Hp now.... Don't think so actually!
He bought it secondhand for only 250 euro's. That would be about 180 pounds.
Unluckily no experience with tuningbox.
