SEAT invests more than 500 million euros in new Leon
Tomorrow SEAT will unveil the new Leon at the Barcelona Motor Show. The company has invested more than 500 million euros in the sportiest model in the brand’s new generation, including development and adaptation of the production process for the market launch, scheduled for the beginning of the second half of this year.
Of the total amount earmarked for this model for the entire development stage, around 350 million euros have been spent on adaptation of the production process at the SEAT Martorell plant, manufacturing and market launch. The remainder has gone into R & D.
This level of investment shows just how much effort the company is putting into renovating its entire product range and launching a new generation of models featuring ground-breaking design and sportiness.
The defining features of this second generation of the new Leon (the first came out in 1999) are its sporty design and driving qualities. This model comes fast on the heels of two other new SEAT models – the Altea and the new Toledo – all of which have been designed and built within the Audi Brand Group since its creation in 2002. Together with the Altea and the Ibiza, the new Leon is one of the pillars of the brand.
With features reminiscent of the Salsa concept car, the new Leon offers greater roominess than its predecessor while maintaining its compact size. Thanks to its specially-designed rear-door handles, hidden in the handle surround, the visual appearance is that of a two-door hatchback, whereas in reality there are four doors. This solution underscores the sporty image of the vehicle
The new Leon’s styling includes expressive headlamps and an attractive bonnet shape, as well as the Dynamic Line, a characteristic design feature of the brand’s new generation of models, which runs along the whole length of the bodywork, dropping from the front wheel-arch to the rear wheel.
Production of the new model is already under way at the Martorell plant, and launch is scheduled for the end of June. In the meantime, because of market demand, particularly for the sportier versions, the current model will continue to be available for a certain period of time.
