View Full Version : Oil Consumption
Can we all give some feedback on roughly how much oil people are actually using.
Reason is that my 10k service was last weekend and I mentioned I have used 2 litres as top ups at intervals for the 7k I have driven the car for since collecting as an ex demo with 3k on the clock.
My dealer told me that Seat advise the for the 2.0 tdi engine you should be using approx 1 pint per thousand miles so I sould have used 7 pints between 3k and the 10k service, suffice to say I didn't.
This appears to be quite high.
What amount of oil do you use and how regular do you top up?

we have 5000 miles on our 2.0TDI - i have only checked the oil levels occassionally and it has always been full. Perhaps i should check it again this w/e.

Thats why I went for new rather than a demo, especially after a test drive

I don't think mine has used any in 5500 miles, but I have to say that the dipstick is probably the hardest one to read that I've ever seen. Does anyone else find this?
Seat say your engine can use upto a certain amount of oil and still be considered within normal range, in reality it varies engine to engine and yours is obviously well within normal.
Mine has used 2.5 to 3 litres in 19,000 miles. Oil consumption should drop once you have passed the 20k mark. Regular oil checks are important. A friend of mine with the 2.0 Tdi in his Octavia hadn't bothered checking it until the low oil light came. By then you are quite a bit past the min level!

Mine hasn't used any right up to the last time I checked, when, at 8800 miles it needed a bit! I have read various reports about this lump using a bit more oil than the older 1.9 (indeed neither the 130 1.9 in my old Cordoba or the 105 1.9 in my Mum's Fabia use any) so I'm not too worried about it yet. On a different point I have also read in a couple of places about there being some slite hesitation on a light 'throttle' once the engine has done 10k or so (one case was a new Octavia, the other a new Golf) and that intrigues me because before I had read either of those notes I had thought that mine (now on 9200) had an occasional slight hesitation - a feeling of holding back, at normal revs on a light throttle - it's not turbo lag and it only happens occasionally. Any one else getting this?

I did recheck mine and found it needed about a litre, (my drive is not completely level and I had to allow for the slight slope), still not too bad for 5500 miles.
Apologies for being smug before and thinking mine had not used any.
I think the last time I checked thorougly it was ok ( 3500 miles), but must have got careless since.
Thanks guys for making me think and saving my engine. :)

re-checked mine today and found it just above the min mark. Will pick up some oil this week. The car has covered 5000 miles.
loadswine - what oil did you use?
Well I haven't had to put any in mine and I was at 4,000 last time I checked... but must check again since I've driven it to Austria from the UK... not only Top Gear and Fifth Gear get to drive across to Central Europe on a jaunt)

i picked up a 1 litre bottle of vw505.01 oil for topping up yesterday from the local Audi dealer. That was castrol. i am visiting the seat garage friday so i will see what they use.
& I picked up 1 litre of VW505 from a VW dealer in Austria today) with free sticky back holder for the boot....
Hi
Mine used 1.5 Litres in the first 2K which did worry me big time..... but for the next 8K till the service used next to nothing certainly not enough to make me topup again.
I use Millers XFE PD oil for topups which is less than half the price of the Qauntum stuff sold by the stealers.

The free sticky back holder had a German logo on it as well and today I went into an Austrian Seat dealer !!!! ... sorry to tease... what did I find out. A nice accessory leaflet and one interesting thing seems to be an add on Blaunpunk bluetooth device that clips / screws below the existing headend... that's what it showed. Fancy double exhaust pipes with a new bumper cost 550 Euros... err you could get a Seat baseball cap... missed out on that. Oh and fancy door handles with chrome.
Think that was about it. The guy knew nothing off the 2006 spec. Said that the New Toledos wasn't selling well when I asked, but Alteas were.
Right well I hope you all enjoyed the quality research).
oh and the aircon works well in 32'C but the duo control doesn't seem too good on mine. Seem temperamental in giving you a seperate temperature. It does work but not very well graduated.

Hi
They do saythat it will use a bit of oil until you get to 2,000 miles.
You do have to carefull what oil you use.
On the PD diesels you MUST use PD oil.
If you have a warranty claim and it has found that you have the wrong oil in it will invalidate your warranty.
Be carefull!!!
I have put a litre and a half in mine so far. The level is quite low at the moment but I am hoping that it is enough to get to the first service (1400 miles to go).

My PD130 used about 750ml in the first 10,000 miles, but only 500ml in the last 15,000.
@Yello -- do you drive the car gently? It may need a good thrash to help the rings bed in ... try giving it 20 minutes keeping the revs in the 3000 - 4000 region and using lots of throttle.

You chaps might want to read the "What oil to use in your TDI (http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=47660)" thread in the TDI forum... :)
I personally use Millers XFE-PD, you can check on the Millers site for your nearest stockist.
May be a slippery thread;).

I got some Millers XFE-PD oil from my local motor factors , :) 5 litres for £24. Not as good as others have managed to get it for, but loads cheaper than the dealer wanted.
