Dear All,
I am waiting for my new company car to arrive - which should be about 5 weeks. I have chosen the Leon 1.8 20v T Cupra.
I have taken one for a test drive and thought the performance to be quite impressive (0-62 in 7.7 and 142mph). I am thinking about chipping the car when I get it, but I have a few concerns...
1. What is the best one to go for in terms of a) cost, and b) the ability to easily remove and install when required with minimal fuss (Remember it is a comany car)
2. Does anyone have any actual official performance figures for a chipped Leon, such as 0-62 and top speed?
I am a newbie here, so apologies if this seems like a simple question!!!
Many thanks in advance...
Stevo.

Your best bet IMO is to get it remapped. By AMD or SJB (Take a look at the links section on the site) This way it becomes untraceble as your orginal chip is reprogrammed.
The cheaper alternative is SuperChips where members of this Bulletin board get a substantial discount)

Specs of a hungarian 1.8T Leon after a modded chip:
Power output 224BHP at 5313 RPM instead of 175BHP at 6154 RPM, torque 341NM (? lb/fts) at 3581 RPM instead of 240NM at 3729 RPM.
Impressive I would say.

cupraman,
i find it highly unlikely that AMD will reprogramme your original chip!
amd will remove your original chip and replace it with one of thier own chips, already set with new settings - it is these new settings in the amd chip that give the power increase.
your original chip will be given back to you for safekeeping.
I also believe that sjb sport DO NOT have the ability or equipment to do either of these things. they must go through a third party, such as amd...
Can somebody confirm this. I was under the impression that AMD actually remapped your originial chip?

OK, so AMD or SJB...
I had a look around the sites and noticed the discount scheme - thanks guys...
Do we have any 0-60 figures for a chipped car?
Stevo.

SJB and AmD are pratically partners, it is true that SJB dont have the equipment to chip cars. But AmD do and SJB use AmD as do also RSD (Road & Sport).
You can order your chip thru SJB, who will then get you booked in at AmD. RSD do also use AmD for certain things but are really an Oettinger Reseller, so they receive their product from Oettinger in Germany.
Either chip would give a good boost of power, and make good improvements to throttle response etc.
The AmD gives you the option of seeing your car on a rolling road, and having the car tuned to your cars engine specifically.
They will replace your exsisting chip, so you will keep hold of the factory one.
The RSD again a great chip, Oettinger do a superb product, but these are pre written for the 20VT in Germany by the Oettinger experts, what they may not take into account is exhausts and filter combinations, they also run a higher octane fuel than we can actually buy in the UK (98 RON) the highest we have is Super(97 RON).
All these may not get the best out of the car, but it will certainly be a whole lot better than standard. The biggest bonus with the RSD Oettinger equiped chip, is the addition of a 3 year warranty. But its pricey costing £795 (approx)
The AmD chip is covered for 12months and is about £500 fitted, which inc rolling road time.
Either as i've said are a good option.

steve warby,
some 0-60 figures have been tested for chipped ibiza 20vt's.
the times below were achieved on alconbury airfield, 8th june 2001, and were recorded using datron timing equipment.
1. 6.4 secs to 60 - this was the best time achieved by the amd chipped vehicle. (traction control off) It is worthy of note that this vehicle was being driven by a professional racing driver.
2. 6.6 secs to 60 - this was the best time achieved by the oettinger chipped vehicle. (traction control off) This vehicle was being driven by the owner.
previous runs proved the professional driver to be at least 0.5 secs quicker to 60 than the owners own times.
speculation on this suggests that the oettinger chipped vehicle will be capable of approx 6.1 secs to 60. (the oettinger chipped car having 10+ more bhp than the amd vehicle)
unfortunately, the professional driver did not have the opportunity to drive the oettinger car.
hope this info is of use to you.

Many thanks mr x.
I was just wondering if paying £500 - £600 for the chip was worth it...!!
If chipping a Leon gets its 0-60 down to sub 7 seconds then I would happily pay out that sort of money for the chip. If you can only get a maximum of ½ second off a 0-60 I don't think it is worth doing for that kind of money...
Anyway - again cheers for the info!
Can't wait to get the car!
Stevo.
P.S. mr x - you're not Homer Simpson are you?!!

I may ask... i´ve heard that the turbo compressor part should be bigger on the 180hp engin than on the 156hp is it so??
And how bigg is the diffrens on the 180hp after chip?
My best 0-62 is 6,48s...yes...my is a 4wd...
What´s the best time made with a fwd car in here?

hey audiosim what chip you got?
Any of you guys looked at www.upsolute.com (http://www.upsolute.com) - they've got a few probs with dbw cars at the mo but I know a few guys who've had their chips and they're well impressed! Less than £200 as well - you need to send your ecu to Austria though as now UK suppliers yet.

OK People - Just one more question!!
I've looked around these web sites, and looked at power curve increases etc etc.
One thing I have noticed is that they all state the car needs to run on Super Unleaded with the new chip with a minimum of 97RON, some with 98.
What difference or damage would occur if I just used normal unleaded petrol? The company I work for pays for my petrol, but only normal unleaded - not super, so if there are any major changes, I am fairly stuck!
------------------
While they do run better on that fuel, they will run OK on normal fuel. During my previous life at SPORTSTEK were we did Oettinger conversions, SOME cars did get a little pinking or very small hesitation when run on normal unleaded instead of the higher octane, but nothing too detrimental.
I do have a bhp and torque graph for the modified Leon, one that we did about a month ago, if you e-mail me direct john@sjbsport.co.uk I can send that on to you.

------------------
SPEAK TO RSD FOR FIGURES OR E-MAIL ME AND I WILL TELL YOU HOW TO FIND THEM.
------------------
It wasn't my leon. The ECU remapping was done in a local tuning workshop called ATC (www.atc.hu), though i'm afraid it does not tell you much. Some interesting things on their site (f.eg 180BHP-400NM 1.9TDI Ibiza), all in hungarian sadly.
------------------
JohnyB, have you made any hitech Leon´s?
I mean like 300hp cars...
One more question, are there diffrent engins (225hp Audi TT) and the Leon(180hp) ?
I´ve been told that there is some diffenses.

Like i would hear that the 225 BHP 1.8T has two intercooloers and maybe a bigger turbo (and probably stronger bearings, rings)? I'm not sure it was ages before.
------------------
audiosim16v: I´ve heard much more stuff... like another camshaft the hole block! the top is the same and pistons but not much more.

if YA REALLY wanna go the whole HOG , TSR aka Tim Stiles Racing (VW at its best ,trust me ive raced his engines before) is currently offering about 10 upgrades of varying increases the top being a 2000cc full conversion for any 1.8T using a turbo, flowed head, cams, filters etc and a lot of engine work @ 304bhp ....YEP 304bhp ,cant get the price though but for power per pound was MENTAL value for money , WHO'S GOT THE GUTS ???? http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/tongue.gif
------------------
flapper , you going for that 300bhp cnoversion or wot?
