View Full Version : Drilled Airbox
Am I likley to cause any problems (MAF sensor etc) from putting about 6 holes (1inch) in my Ibiza's airbox. I ask because a friend of mine has got a Fiat Coupe 20VT and now he has drilled the airbox it sounds fantastic with a low throaty induction roar.

You sure you want to allow hot engine bay air into the cold ducted inlet airbox? Might sounds nice yes... but you will lose power.
Bill
Fair point but if I run some large ducting from the grill or from the bottom spoiler that should not be a problem.......should it?
Do you think that there would be any other problems at all? My mates coupe has not had any and my old saxo was fine, to loud :D but fine!
Cheers,

Agreed :D
slow speed (read traffic) will have a hot engine bay compared to 60mph motoring, so if you are able to combine the hole in the airbox with being able to duct ONLY cold air directly to this new hole, then you should pick up some gains.
When I ran my 16v Jetta on its factory injection, I did exactly this, but ducted cold air to it also. It helpd pick up 7bhp and 12lb/ft of torque at AmD's rollers. - Geoff did the mod back then. Marvellous I thought - free power !
enjoy

I couldn't work out why my 98 cupra sport was lacking so much power compared to what it used to.
When fiddling wit me engine (like u do) I discoverd that the light eyebrows which I fitted to make da beast look beta were covering up da air inlet behind de front light.
Took me eyebrows off + my babies back2its best!!!
get an induction kit, get a proper one like a viper a twister or a k&n on the end of some phat piping.
if you drill your airbox it will cost you loads to get a new one and you'll end up wishing you had just got a real induction kit in the first place.

No harm in drilling the Airbox as long as its the side away from the engine and as previously stated large cold air ducting .
Done this mod to my old Golf 16v (mk2) and as Bill stated " FREE POWER " if done correct .
If youre not sure what youre doing it could cost you more in the long run ( new airbox )and you will lose power.

Which one of these induction kits would you chaps recommend?. I have read all the reviews and questions on this forum about the Hurricane and it seems like a good kit but I have not seen any info on the Twister kit, has anybody (Bill) got any info on the twister i.e. price, comparisons between it and the Hurricane, ease of fitting and has anybody had a twister fitted for any period of time to check for MAF sensor probs etc?
Thanks
Brian
Ps If any of you (Bill again!) have got any pics of the Twister could please email some to brian.p.smith@marconi.com

There is minimal difference between the Hurricane filter unit and the Twister filter unit from the outside. The Twister has a fluted spiral arrangementment moulded into the top of the airfilter, where the Hurricane does'nt.
The Twister is just a filter housing available with different diameter inlets, whereas the Hurricane induction kit comprises a cold air feed pipe, inlet elbow, aux air input pipe connection as well as the filter itself.
As for MAF compatability and the filters themselves, there is no difference in construction or oiling. Both are fine and safe.
As for pictures... The Twister looks the same externally as the Hurricane.

the viper is another one which is supposed to be good but its expensive.
you could always fabricate a system from some exhaust pipe and samco hoses - not that hard and allows you to customise it for your engine and you decide where in the rev range you want the most power - could be 4k could be 6k upto you.
