Hi IM thinking of buying a Toledo V5 but before I do can anyone tell me if there are any problems to look out for other than the Air Mass Sensor? Also if I buy a 150BHP model, does anyone know what has been done by Seat to put out 170BHP? Can a re-map sort out the power? Many thanks to anyone who can help.

The 150 has a 10v head and the 170 has a 20v. The 170 also uses a coil pack per cylinder but the 150 has a single on with HT leads.

150 can be tuned to about 170 but the 170's can be tuned up to about 190....Hang on for a 170 if you can.

As Unikarl says the 10v/20v head is the main difference. I guess it all depends what your budget is - you can pick up 10v V5's cheaply and get an awful lot of car for your money these days. I like having something relatively rare and understated - the small V5 badge being the only clue. Spec is great and I find things like the electric memory seats that came as standard on my '99 model (deleted on later 20v versions) a real bonus. I've not tried a 20v but I'm getting mine remapped next week at AmD so I'll let you know the results. They quote a gain of between 15-20 bhp. If you've got more money I guess the 20v makes sense. I know I'm in the minority but I actually prefer the look of the standard alloys on mine over those on the 20v.

The 10v is OK but not blistering off the line and be aware that with a heavy front end and saloon body the handling won't compare to a Leon. Having said that it eats up motorway miles and feels very refined. Decent tyres and other mods can help a bit - just search the forum, I think that people debated their 10v/20v preferences on here before. I do find my V5 can leave a lot of other cars struggling if I need a burst in the 60-90 mph range with no gear changes required - nice and torquey (by the way does anyone know 50-70 stats for the V5 models?). The engine sound is wonderful. Reading a lot of threads lately you might get put off by apparant reliability issues(especially MAF), but mines been OK except for brake switch failure (now replaced with upgraded switch). It will be interesting to see if AmD spot any other faults.

Bit of a long reply there, but I think you can tell I like the car!

Just read Saul's post and yes if your budget stretches and you like whatever else the Toledo offers why not a 1.8T sport? Or...even a 150 bhp diesel version (though hard to find and probably expensive).

Actually the electric memory seats are still standard equipment on the V5 170 bhp version. Although you do lose the dash display for the radio and the rear sun blind and the rear speaker connectors in the rear centre consol. That said you get bigger brakes and sat nav.

I have owned 4 V5's in total both models and have loved all of them.

You will find either model excellent they are just a bit different with the power delivery.

Cheers

I think I’ll be going for a 150, mainly because im on a budget. I currently have a Mercedes C280 on a T plate (197bhp) but im trying to downsize & save some money so I can move house. The 150 with the re-map should be enough for me. It works out a better power to weight ratio than the merc anyway. Thanks for the info.

I defer to your wisdom Davie having owned both types. I did think I had read on here that some who had the memory seats missed them on later models. I thought they may still have been there on early 20v versions but that it went when the alarm was upgraded - something like '02? Anyhow, I stand corrected. Good to hear you liked both models.

I would have thought a re-map will put the V5 pretty much on a par with the C280 and you would probably get all the spec and refinements you are used to. One downside to point out is rear leg room - doesn't bother me, but there's not much of it. You get a huge boot though.

here in Croatia you could buy (now we have new toledos on sale) Toledo with 180HP, 1.8T 20V, nice engine for tuning ;)

I used to have a 170 V5 (2002) you get a lot of kit for your money (sat.nav. etc) and the sound of the V5 does sound nice. The only thing I can say against a V5 well mine it guzzles fuel and was more suitable to motorways or A roads any mixed city driving then my mpg would be about 22mpg!
Enjoy!
I miss my V5 as others have said its a much underestimated car. I've changed to a Leon cupra or FR as they are called now and although I enjoy it -I miss the Toledo's uniqueness, it was like a wolf under sheeps clothing..nobody would expect me to go fast in that car and then after I overtook them they'd come out... by then I'd be gone! In the cupra its different I find people trying to race me everyday and TBH I'm not finding it that fast... it sounds like its faster as its much noisier but when I look at the speedo its no faster than that the V5 I had...maybe need to get the new car chipped!
