Has anyone seen this new Sony headunit the Sony MEX-1HD MP3, read the features list and it looks impressive, not to mention the screen. I was going to the new Pioneer MMp3 player until I saw this little baby !
So do they look as impressive in the flesh ? And how do they sound ?

Looks as quality in the flesh, although I didn't get a chance to listen to it. Can imagine sound quality will be on a par with the Pioneer, I've owned Hu's from both makes and I'd buy a Sony over the Pioneer, mostly for aesthetics though! Having said that I've had no problems with either make but prefer my Kenwood.:)

I just read somewhere that it hasn't got a removable front ! Yikes are they mad ? Are they including free theft insurance or something ?
I don't suppose anyone has seen one in the flesh yet ?
Any ideas on how much this type of thing would cost?
Have too many MP3's now & can't be bothered to put em on CD as Audio

HOW BLEEDING MUCH?? Flipping eck :)
I'm using a IRiver2 MP3 player in my current car with a RF transmitter in the glove (connects to the back of the stereo with passthru cable) - pretty good - 20hrs of music on one CD :) Total cost 150quid.
Thinking of changing it for the new Creative JukeBox 3 which has 20gig of storage, costs 300quid, is portable with a SNR of 96db odd... Mates got one, looks pretty good to me.
Still trying to work out if i want a dedicated MP3 unit in the new car.. Want one with a hard drive, not a CD tho..

Sorry to disapoint but it's only a single disk CD-player, but the thing with the sony's is that you can connect a 6 disk mp3 cd-changer. They do do a new Hard Disk One but it's something like 1500 quid. I've already got a creative labs Jukebox, but the smaller capacity model. It's great for taking on holiday with the docking station which I also got, a bit big to carry round in the gym. But a bit messy for the car. The reason I didn't fancy a HDD based solution for the car is that it is a mission to sync, selecting all the records, moving them over etc. A lot easier to burn a CD in a couple of minutes with all the latest tunes and take it down to the car with you.
One day they will probably invent a huge HDD for the car that automatically talks via Wireless Ethernet to your home PC and synchronises all the content with your computer hard disk. Now that wouldn't be really cool.

Hehhe :) Well the big differences with the Jukebox 3 are:
- larger capacity
- long battery life (typical 11 hours one battery, 22 with two!)
- much improved SNR plus proper pre-amp
- smaller and lighter
- USB 1.1 *AND* FIREWIRE
That last one is v. important cos firewire is damn quick compared to USB 1.1 - BTW all the audigy soundcards from creative come with a 'free' firewire port :)
Problem I have with CD solutions is I find myself burning a new CD fairly often, and it takes me ages to decided what to delete so i can add some new stuff. Even MP3 changer units aren't anywhere near as good as a hard drive, which doesn't suffer from seek time problems for example, nor does it have a relatively small capacity - say 700mb per CD X 7 in your example - nowhere near even a modest HD (20GIG).
I've got my current unit all stashed in the glove, no wires, no mess. The other thing i'm looking at is the mStation which solves it all by having a removable unit that can sit in the car AND the pc.. There's a number of things like this around... Dunno, I'm thick me

Now what I'd really like is a Mp3 Head unit with hard disk and Wifi, just think every time you parked your car at home it would talk via wifi to your desktop machine and re-sync all your records and playlists. You would never have to worry about transfering files over again. Who's gonna invent one then ?
