Hi everyone,
I'm new to this so bear with me.

I have a toledo 2001 with 1.8 20v 125bhp non turbo engine. (slow i know!)
Just recently it's not half so smooth power delivery as before. Especialy when you first go to accelerate or lift off. It almost seems like it's misfiring before yuo reach 4000 rpm.
I realise that to remap the chip may solve this, but as its a recent prob, could it be something to do with the MAF. Has it even got a MAF as it's not turbo.

Could it be the coil.

Any help would be much appreciated.

THanks

Dude dont put ya car down.. tis plenty fast enough.......i have very recently discovered this prob too.
used to be as i changed into second gear.......foot down but feels like it is holding back, then all of a sudden it clears (until next gear change...) tis doing it from start now! It does have a MAF its in the box shape after the air filter....i am bricking it if its that!!! expensive...
due a service, and MOT so when i get paid......into Seat it goes......will keep you posted if you dont find out first...
cheers bud

Cheers for that mate.
I'm suprised that anyone on here has a non turbo like me.
I've been doing some more research on the net, and seems like its possible to clean the MAF. I'm getting some electrical cleaner tomoorow. I found the MAF where you said, so will let you know. Hoping i don't break it, couldnt afford to replace!!

It is the MAF, cleaning will help but the problem does come back. An exchange unit is about £70 so not the end of the world.

Just as a follow up:
i cleaned the maf with the electrical cleaner, and it feels like a new car (well almost!)
Definitely smoother to accelerate and lift off. No more power, but didn't expect that anyway. Changes gear smoother as well.

Cheers for the help guys

Sam: Notice you got the 17" alloy's. Have you found they have helped handling/ stability? Also have you changed any of the suspension?
Reason i ask, is that the handling isn't too great as standard, but moore than that, if you're on the motorway and its a bit windy, there's not a lot of stability either.
Cheers mate

All this talk of dodgy Maf's on NA 1.8's has meant mine has decided to pack up good and proper! I will try cleaning it but I think it might be terminal!

Soz to hear about yours going chris...hope you get it sorted......

the 17" deffo changed the handling for the better......it was well floaty before and when i was pushing it (a couple of months after puchase) i nearly lost it on a corner........the back end just flipped out.......i havent lowered it with these wheels but the improvement is amazing.....like a diff car......they are 225 so i guess the wideness of the tyres is also helping the grip issue! :)

I have the same problem, the stealer checked the MAF and said it's working okay.
Now I'm stumped.

Any suggestions ?

Just a quick reply. My car is still suffering.
My boyf has bought Vag Com and has been talking to Saul on this forum......currently checking maf values at different revs...i dont really understand it myself, but on quick comparison the values are way different to what was expected....
another post on here recently said that unless the Maff was totally bu**ered, it wont give any fault codes (incidently i have n fault codes). We have a couple of other things to try but i think for te sake of £70 and just disconnecting the battery for a while, we are just gonna get a Maff and see.
Will keep you posted. :)

I assume you're getting a re-conditioned MAF, rather than shelling out for a brand new one?

To be honest i am not sure. it is through the dealers on an exchange basis. price is normally 70 quid plus vat, but getting a discount for being on this forum. doin it through IMG seat in warrington.
Will find out what the score is tomorrow when it is picked up.

although 200miles away(working in Cambridge for a couple of days) i had to call last night to find out the results of the plug in.................................

new MAF plugged in and car reset...............(battery disconnection).........and..................................................SHE'S BACK YAY!!!!

it has been taken for a spin and no more sluggishness apparently. my boyf has been using the Beeza FR and says its hard to compare whether power is back to normal cas it is slower (that means he has been ragging the beeza!!!! :censored:
anyway.........i go home tomorrow and the first thing i will do having not driven for three days is try my baby out!!!!!

it was all thanks to VAG com diagnosis........cant recommend it enough..........still lots to learn but is cheaper than STEALER!!!

cost £85 that was with a member discount and including vat........

What do you guys do when you clean the MAF? Easy enough to remove?

Sam20v
