Are there set intervals that you should replace the water pump at? Mine's 4 years old and is just about to have a cambelt change at 55k miles. Is it worth me getting the water pump replaced as well? Does the coolant system have to be drained to change the pump?

Cheers

if you are doing the belt i'd agree get a new pump too

may seem dearer at moment but cheaper in the long run

I got JBS to do mine when they did the 100,000 service as they recommend it be done also get one with a metal impellor should last 4 times as long, get one from here www.seatspares.com

The main reason I chose to do it as they told me of a TT that had not long had its cambelt change and shortly after the waterpump went and from what I remember it needed a lot of work £££££ better spend £50 on a water pump now while the cambelts off than it go later on.

My advice considering the experience of my last 20vt is without doubt to change the water pump when doing the timing belt.
I personally think that Seat`s timing belt maintenance requirement at 120000 mile is rather ambitious.
I got caught with water pump failure at 67000 miles on the last car - luckily, I wasn`t too far from home.
The symptoms were puzzling at first - the engine temp suddenly went high and the warning light came on - the car was driveable, and the temp returned to normal while I coasted along on neutral throttle - as soon as I put the engine under load the temp rose again - I at first though the engine thermostat was faulty!
Doing this I was luckily able to travel the 30 miles back to base and get attention
On inspection, a piece had broken off the pump impeller, obviously reducing the pump`s efficiency.
The impeller is plastic - this may well be a feature of the design philosophy, in that if the coolant freezes, then the impeller will be sacrificed to save destroying the teeth on the timing belt and thus losing valve timing
Pumps with cast impeller are available - `you takes yer choice!`
My own choice from experience, would be to do both timing belt and pump as a matter of course at 60000 miles - for all the job entails.

Hey thats whats just happened to me should have cost me 200 pounds but Seat contributed 50% so only cost a 100 ( BTW water pump is only about 30 pounds ) Also a big thanks to Lister Seat Coventry for sorting me out a courtesy car and fixing mine at short notice.

Cheers.

Yes I'm going to get both done. It's only going to cost a few quid extra in labour (obviously plus the pump) so worthwhile doing.

I was only unsure as I've never needed to replace a water pump on a car before.

Ok did a search, anyone know where I can one of these metal impellor's from quickly?

Seatspares link above doesn't work above.

Was driving along this morning, temp gauge shooting up and then back down to normal again and kept doing it.

So car is now at local Skoda garage awaiting repair, so I need to source one of these metal impellors asap as they can't look at it probably until Friday.

So it's going to cost me a fortune as I have to pay £15+ vat per day for a Skoda Fabia 16V Sport Courtesy Car + cost of new pump and replacement of timing belt, so looking at least £300+ !!!!

Please help asap !

I'm sure the issue with the temp gauge is because of a faulty temp sender unit. Easy to fix and should only set you back about £20.

I think you misunderstand my car has been looked at by a Skoda Technician (Techie on here) and he has diagnosed the faulty impellor, so hence why I need a new metal one !

Ok the parts nos I have are:

Old water pump: 06A121011L

New water pump: 06A121011T

Can anyone please confirm what the part number they purchased was for the metal/brass impellor version?

The reason I ask is that Pilling Skoda say that the part number they have is as the new one above but with x on the end, but they say it is a plastic version when Seat Spares had it in stock and it is definetely a brass impellor !

Oh and cost from Pilling is going to be £338 + VAT ! :-o

I was told

GSF do a brass version
EIP I think to a cast Iron version - not recommended in that materials
Also Murrays defo do a brass version (well for the 210 LCR) will find you a web link

It wasn't EIP my mistake it was ECS

Cut and Paste from previous thread

OK been doing some research and VAG still produce the std part in plastic, can;t be that many warranty issues me thinks anyway found a link on VW Vortex........

ECS tuning www.ecstuning.com do a Cast Iron version

and in the UK www.vwandaudi.co.uk Murray's parts do a Brass Impeller odd choice of material but better than plastic.

Seat Leon Cupra R 2003 AMK engine Brass Impeller £23.05 + VAT + Delivery...this is just the impeller not the pump / O-ring etc

May well be worth people ordering one when they have the cambelt done to get one put in at the same time...

Replacement Impellar (std VAG part) is plastic and in my car only lasted 40k Miles :( plastic impellar sat on metal spline :thumbd:

The thought of a broken water pump impellar leading to melted engine bits is very scary

Mines a 2nd car if it does 40-50k i would be happy it would be ready for an engine rebuild anyway by then. I only do 5k a year in it now.

Who's G&S?

Also do you know the part number Bill?

I rang ECP earlier and spoke to Stu, he said something like £22.5 delivered, he also checked it and said it was a metal impeller version, but Pilling Skoda are saying it is a plastic OEM version! but he has 06A121011TX part (X= exchange).
