View Full Version : short ratio or 6 speed box?

Hi All,

I have recently purchased a 97 Ibiza 2.0 16v Gti, before this I owned an Honda Integra Type R which has since been written off after a hit and run outside my house (not happy). The seat doesn't compare on the fun scale just now, but I reckon with either shorter gear ratio's or even fitting 6 speed box the Ibiza could be extremely rapid, is there anyone out there who can advise if either of the above are easily done or even possible! Also what other mods would you guys recommend for getting more power out of the car.

Cheers

Andy

i've just got back from a club gti track day and the man/men you need to speak to are as follows:robT,bill brockbank, rob has the car and bill supplies the kit.
robs 2ltr 16v,although a different block to yours is running throttle bodies, and the power output is well over 200bhp,his car is stripped out rally style ,so weighs a good bit less than a "road"car but it flies, think he has 276 cams from shrick and has had the head polished and ported.
bit too much for you?the cams and head will give you a good 170 odd bhp and the gear boxes are available at mucho costo, getting the handling a bit better is also a good one on the ibiza suspension and anti roll bars or for cornering a quafe lsd is available.
so shop around any good vw tuner/supplier and its basically down to your wallet.
BTW i have a 1.816v and thinking of all of the above, just wish i had the money. GOOD LUCK:cheers:

Ratio wise, Rob T changed to 020 2Y ratios with a 3.94 final drive to improve acceleration. Quife ATB also in there.. :D

My 2ltr 16 Jetta also runs the same spec box and ratios. Good for sprinting and a max speed rev limited in 5th of 135mph.

For engine mods for this engine, browse by my website (url below)

Hi

As Bill and Jason have said already - 200bhp plus is possible with your engine (I have 216) and with the gearbox mods for more grip and acceleration, it makes for a very fast car IMO. However, all this does not come cheap (what does in tuning ?)- head, cams, throttle bodies, ECU, gearbox and diff is probably getting on for £5K. In a 97 car you will probably have a 'Tall Block' ABF engine with I think a cable change 02A box - not sure about what ratios to use in this I am afraid as as Bill said, I have a 020 rod change box used in earlier cars and mk2 golfs (mine is a 96 car).

Best of luck - personally I think its worth the effort as the ibiza has a good chassis, is a good size and, for modern car standards, can be made quite light (mine is 1045kg fully fuelled and still could easily loose another 50kg)

Cheers
