Can any-one help my with understanding the concept of Anti roll bars....
How do they work ?
Will they help Ibiza Cupra handling with a standard suspension ?
Do i need front / rear bars ?
Are they availble. if so where from approx prices.
im unsure about what suspension to get so was thinking this could be a short term solution.
comments please

Have a look under the front of your car and you'll see a wishbone on either side. These are fixed via a pivot at the chassis end and through a ball joint at the other (wheel) end. This is the heart of your suspension.
When driving and you want to go round a corner, the forces gang up on you and conspire to try and make the car carry on in a straight line. This results in a weight shift to the outside tyre, compressing the suspension on that side. This is usually complimented by the inside tyre trying to lift.
What an anti roll bar does is clamp to both wishbones and also to the chassis across the car. When one wheel travels up and the other tries to travel down, this twists the anti roll bar. The bar resists this twisting force, so the upward travel of the outside wheel and the downward travel of the inside wheel is limited. This (generally) keeps the car flatter relative to the chassis.
There is a danger with anti roll bars of taking things too far. A bigger bar presents more resistance, and if you generate large cornering forces the outside wheel will load up regardless. Because the anti roll bar is doing its’ best to keep the axle level relative to the chassis, the anti roll bar CAN actually make the inside wheel lift MORE relative to the ground.
Hope that all makes sense,
G
Along the same lines - I've got a Mk3 Golf ARB in the garage as that's what fits (defo) the Pre 99 Ibiza
I would really like to offer it up to a 00- model to see if it's the same (that way you can buy the Eibach ARB's)
Cheers
Mark
I have Eibach ARBs and they rock, with little roll:rockon:

are they avaialble for the ibiza Cupra 20vt ?
how much ?
Are they worth having with standard suspension ?
That's why I'd like to see if the ARB's are the same - I have one not fitted to a car & would like to see if it's the same as the one on yours.
Where are you?

mark was that directed at me or f2 big stu
i do not have them fitted and was looking into them.
It's directed at you mate. you DO have ARB's on your car.
just not thick ones. I want to see if my one (mk3 golf) is the same as on the Ibiza 20VT. that way you can buy an eibach set just like Stu's.

thanks mark for your help - (crossed the language barrier)
surprised that we do not have an answer on this ?
Just a lack of anyone not wanting to see if it fits I guess. I seem to remember Star Performance saying something about it once. not sure where that went
BUT - Mk3 Golf Front & MK4 Polo rear is about right. just got to test it.
I'm not at work today - else I'd drop some emails to people with 20VT's locally to me.
Funnily enough I emailed Star about this a couple of days ago... still waiting for a reply.
I really feel I need uprated AntiRoll bars... I have the excellent PSS9 suspension kit but the car still rolls way too much.
If anyone finds anything out then please let us know.
Cheers

In answer - I was speaking to Bill about this very matter on Saturday as he would like to uprate the ARB's on his 20vT. He had a look under my 2.0 8v (again) and looking at it the rear beam appears to be the same. I suggested he have a little look at part numbers on ETKA to see if the rear beam IS actually the same part for a mk2 and a mk3 Ibiza. I don't know the outcome of this, but i'm sure he'll post up on here when he has an answer.
Eibach have been saying they have a set under development for the mk3 Ibiza for quite some time now. Usually when a company like Eibach say something like that, it means it'll be ready to roll (no pun intended) in a couple of months. Now, nearly a year later... All i'm saying is "Don't hold your breath for a mk3 specific kit".

ARB's and suspension kits do very different things. Yes, as major suspension components they are inextricably linked, but what they do and how they acheive it is worlds apart. If you don't like the car rolling into directional changes, fit uprated ARB's (if you can source some). If you don't like the way the car handles in general, fit a suspension kit. And then consider uprating the ARB's too.

Glyn,
I'm going to see if I can offer one up on a 20VT asap to see if they fit.

I had wondered if you were at work...
Will get the CD done this afternoon, but prob won't get round to posting until tomorrow. And by time Consignia have done their bit, you might get it sometime next month... They really are a bunch of :moon:
