Hi,
I have a query about warranty validation with imported cars, are there any clauses? I have just spoken to my local dealer and he said that it is under the discression of Seat UK whether or not they honour the warranty which would be under written by Seat Spain. i.e. if i bought an import and something went wrong, and required fixing under my warranty, seat UK may or may not fix it, and i would have to pay for the repair?? have i been informed correctly?

I would speak to Amethyst about this, as they have been Import friendly.

Hi there
Sounds like the dealer is taking the piss. The Seat 2 year warranty on imports is valid Europe wide and it is an EU LEGAL REQUIREMENT for it to be honoured by Seat wherever you buy the car. Tell your dealer that you would like his contact details to forward to your MEP so that they can take him to court for illegal, restrictive practices. I got something similar from a local dealer who tryed to tell me that the warranty on an import was only for 1 year. You dont get the 3 year warranty on an import that you would on a UK buy, but if I remember correctly, it is 2 years unlimited milage versus 3 years 60k limit for the UK dealer warranty.
That should do it ! :D

Remember that the 2 year European wide warranty only came into affect in September 2001 so if your car was first registered before then, it is 1 year and not 2. Although mine was delivered to me in November 2001, it was first registered (in Holland) just before (like, days) this cut-off point, so they refuse to honour a 2 yr warranty. Luckily I have an extended warranty through the importers (Virgin).

2yr came into use Nov1st 2001.
Think they are taking the piss. I've always been led to believe that EU directive states that EU warranties must be honoured, but you do have to register you car with Seat.
Dont know who your local dealer is. Mine is Pinchbeck and they werent very happy that I had an import, so now I've gone elsewhere. 3 services a year is quite a bit of work they will be missing. I'm sure Great Covert are okey with imports.
off topic- lee j - how long did you have to wait for your Leon through Virgin, any hassle? just a mate in the office has just ordered a Golf TDi150 from them and I pushed him in the direction of some posts on uk.rec.import mailgroup (not sure of exact name) and now he's real worried!

Many thanks for the replies so far, I'm really tempted to just buy an import from Wim or UM, I can save upto 3.7K on the new MY2003 Cupra, with leather and ESP!! The warranty is a big issue for me, didn't want to buy an import, then if something went wrong I would have no seat dealer to turn too!! Hopefully if anything does go wrong I'll just have to take it to an import friendly dealer to repair (anybody know of any), if my local dealer refuses to repair it (which by the sound of things are legally bound to).

Volkswagen were quoted in What Car a while back (year or so ago) after one of their dealers refused to carry out a warranty repair on an imported golf.
After "What Car" contacted VAG on behalf of the client, they said something along the lines of "It is of course our policy to comply with EU legislation ~ it would be illegal not to.."....and the guy got his car fixed by the stroppy dealer forthwith.
Since Volkswagen are the parent co of SEAT.....you should be OK.
Despite this, be aware that you may encounter stroppy dealers ~ let them know how impressed you are by going elsewhere.
There ARE dealers out there who are happy for your custom.
Said it before several times ~ I feel genuinely sorry for UK dealers as it's not their fault that UK prices are so much higher....they CAN'T buy from global manufacturers as cheaply as other countries.
I expect them to realise however that it isn't my fault either, and not to penalise me for buying the same product for 65% of their price. They didn't "lose a sale", 'cos without import-savings I would still buy 2yr old cars. The smart dealers realise that they can't win the war against imports, but they can still make money on customers via aftersales support.
I've a good mind to follow my local (import-stroppy) dealer home at night....if he goes to the supermarket rather than buying every item on his shopping list from his local corner shop I'm gonna kick his 4rse for non-support of his local business  ;)
Richard Huzzey in Newbury will, might be a bit far but they did mine and gave me a courtsey car. MATTY on the forum is the sales guy there.

Have you spoken to Kevin Fisher at Great Covert?
