Interesting the new TFSI has come in at group 11, whereas the equivalent (in power) Mk1 FR is 16. For reference the R is 17.

Makes sense - it should be lower with the safety features & better seats :)

Less appealing to steal, just joking :hide:

Probably a back hander to the insurance companies, will it not put VW noses out of joint now ?

It's also slightly slower than the FR although perhaps not 5 groups slower ...

The lower rating is that the car is not seen as a Hot Hatch where as the FR and LCR are marketed and viewed as Hot Hatches. Drivers are these cars are seen as a higher risk and we pay the price.

erm - no

insurance groups aren't worked out by model name.

it's by bhp, bhp/tonne, safety features, anti whiplash seats, cost of panel replacement, crash ratings

I take your point re the above however insurers do factor in /stereo-type the person that is likely to be attracted to performance models. eg the beezer TDi FR is quoted at group 8 where as the Cupra TDi is quoted as insurance group 16. The extra performance alone does not justify the steep increase insurance costs.

well - I'm going by the information provided by SEAT to me when they were explaining how insurance groups are made.

but maybe I made it all up.

Insurance groups are based purely on the 'the car' not the demographic group that may buy it.

if it's seen as attractive to thieves, it will be a high group too - for those in the know, the FR and Cupra are the most sought after models (by thieving c*nts) and as a result will command a higher premium.
