View Full Version : pvw cover car
this car is supposedly pushing out 200+bhp @the wheels from a 1.816v engine,is this possible?it has balanced and lightened everything and some ex rally car cams from shrick and runs weber carbs, just wondering if this is possible or pvw/owner hyping it up a bit,car is really nice btw and won best of show @gti so top marks to the guy anyway, but is the figure a little optomistic??

Optomistic claim :D
No chance.

wouldn't rule it out though cause the new mg rover zr 1.8 16v comes in a 180bhp version and thats straight of the production line!!
BUT
that's a K series and last time I checked nobody had one in a SEAT :)

Looking through the spec, even with all the rotating masses lightened and balanced, I think 200+bhp @wheels from a KR is WAY optimistic. Yes, the pair of 45 DCOE's may make a luverly noise and be relatively simple to work with but I doubt they'll make that sort of peak power.

HA HA
it'd just have to p1ss fuel in..
must have added a big bore 4 since the last RR?

Yes I would.
First of all 180bhp flywheel is'nt anywhere close to 200bhp @ wheels.
2nd, the VW motor is crap by comparison. - sad but true.
Great for pub talk and ego's but very unlikely to be real. More than likely a journalist got it round his neck and said wheels where flywheel was the actual owners claims. (still high, but at least in the realms of possibility, given the mods done to that car)

still a spanking car though eh?even the ford alloys look cool:cheers:

Definately... Superb effort.. Well detailed.
Work of art.
Respect to the owner/builder that took a lot of effort.
Shame the journalist could'nt get the facts right tho...
I know all too well how accurate they are in their ramblings...

Is the Vw engine really worse than the k series???, the k was designed as a 1.4, hence the small valves etc, would have thought the KR would have more performance orientated valve setup

Sadly yes Prof - while the K series may have originally been designed as a 1.4, it's a very tuneable engine with a LOT of potential, which is why so many of the kit car boys like them (plus Ford Kent's are getting a bit long in the tooth now).
As for valving, VAG KR motor can't take much of an increase in valve sizes without b*ggering up the flowing as the head is fairly well packed to start with. As with most VAG engines, the inlet side is quite decent and flows quite nicely, but the exhaust does not tend to flow too well at all. And it's a sad fact of life but you need to get the exhaust out before you can put more fuel & air into the cylinder.
Don't forget that the KR is basically a multivalve PB, which is an updated DX which is an enlarged EG (original mk1 Golf GTi 1.6) - so the basis for the engine dates back to the mid 70's rather than the late 80's as the K series does.

what about a 20v head on a 16v block?no chance or would it fit?moreover would it help the asthmatic breathing any???

Different oil drain holes between the 2.
Same 10 bolts head bolt pattern tho.
Looked at this myself a couple of years ago for the old..... you know what :p
20v n/a is a much better place to start from.
Outflows a ported 16v head straight out of the box.
Bill
right need to look for a written off 20v atmo then, probably cheaper than a flowed head anyway

Sorry, it's 160BHP
180BHP is from the 2.5 V6 :jog:

200@wheels huh ? not a chance. More like 200@fly possibly given spec. Best 16V yet documented in the golf shootout is bills @ 174@wheels. It takes a very tasty forced induction engine (presently) to break the 200@wheels mark. I think its possible though with a 2L 16V. G.Vanstone's 20V atmos on throttle bodies makes @ 180@wheels and is well rapid.
Cheers
Rob
mmmm,1.820v N/A seems a cheaper/easier option than turbo conversion, and a darn site cheaper no doubt.my engne has done over 500 miles this week end, and is developing a rattle.
come on autotechnic wheres me leads and dizzy?
