After buying new pads for both front and rear, i got the fronts on no probs, but had trouble doing the rears so i had to put the old completely shagged pads back in until i can get some assistance from someone who has done them before, i know that they must be turned and pressed in at the same time, but how the hell do you do it!! ive only two hands and found it impossibe. Is the best way to get someone else to help.
Another thing, the head of the piston has two slats cut, is there a tool openly available to purchase that uses these slats to turn the piston and enable the whole process to be made easier?
HELP !!!! horrible grinding noise until i get it sorted!!!!
the seat special tool is a round pipe shaped thingy with 2 prongs that sit in those hole's. (technical explanation's never were my strong point) :D
i have seen peep's make there own b4 so could b worth a go :)
the pistons need winding clockwise an pressind inwards for them to go in, Did the discs and pads all round on our bammer today in fact and my usual method of using a angle grinder spanner and screw driver combo did'nt work, so i popped down to halfords and bought the special brake wind-back tool to do it with for Ł20 made by Sykes and pickarvant and had em wound back in a jiffy;)
I've had that same tool as you bought today stu for over 2 years. It's been used loads of times & as Martyn will tell you, is the easiest thing to use - can't understand why people used G-Clamps & risk not pushing it back nice & square.
M
For normal push back piston calipers i just use a pair of big grips(right of picture) as appossed to the wind back tool(left of picture) which works absolutly fine
brend, think when i refurbed mine i held the hand brake lever back and wound it in with some mole grips(very careful not to let them slip)but the proper tool for the job is always easier, but when the calipers off you can't pop to halfords:MORAL,get what ya need first:cheers:

Machine Mart do quite a neat caliper spreading tool for cheaper than the Halfords one - about Ł15 plus VAT (or not if you get an invite to one of their no VAT promotions :) ) - see here http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=040210268&r=2076&g=111 Mine's done the pads on my Ibiza and even unstuck a partially siezed caliper on my mk1 and as MarkP says, why anyone would bother d1cking about with G clamps and winding the piston back on a p1ss is beyond me...

the wee ring that the spring goes through at the top of the pad is actually worn right down to flat, left rear disk is already scouring , need to get it sorted soon, awful noise, goes right through me..
As a rule, id change the discs if the pads wore down that much (metal to metal)
change em all brend,if the discs are scoring, zimmerman are quite cheap and cheerful and they are drilled.ecp,gs&f,all stock ;)

rallied it home tonight and guess what, near lost all brake feel!! rear left is completely gone, problem is, i have the pads but cant get them on cause i cant get the piston back , the disk is really scored , id say the top 50% of the disk height is a freaction of a mil down already :(
pedal travel is huge, the cheap pads o bought to do me for a month or two fade right quick cause more weight is being loaded onto them cause the backs arnt helpng!!
oh dear, hope ya get it sorted soon m8

Good luck, mate!
No bugger mentioned when changing the rear discs on me beeza that its the whole feckin hub/bearing you need to change!
Not until the new ebc turbo-groove discs arrived and the half-hour job I was expecting turned into one long rain-sodden, bearing-buggered, freeze-yer-knackers-off weekend of hell!
Still, now its sorted the brakes are mint. :D
But thats why I`m skint! :(

re: Haynes manual.
I`ve never changed rear discs b4 on any car & got carried away at the thought of non-knackered brakes & didn`t read the feckin Haynes.
Anyway, reading it wasn`t too much help -"remove bearing. Refitting is the reverse of the above.".
Great. Thanks.
Over-exagerated, but you get the point.
What happened, Brendy?
Did it just fail to stop or did the wheels fall off?
