No doubt the Leon is better, miles better handling and brakes that work (he says waiting for the abuse to start.......)

lol nobody seems to want to fight :(
Whats the diffrence between the ibiza and leon brakes and Engine i thought the were the same?
It's just a bigger car. wider track, longer wheelbase, not originally designed as a Shopping Trolley cum Town car (way back in 1993)

Leon is just a better chassis - sure an ibiza may beat it from a standstill as its lighter but when they are moving the Leon just handles better and, IMO, has great brakes. Lift off mid corner and the ibiza wants to spin, Leon is settled. Once moving, I wouldn't mind betting that the Leon is quicker also.
These comments all refer to std cars and are just my observations having owned both cars.
ps - to really start a row, I would also say that the 8V / 16V ibiza's outhandle the 20VT's - my 8V (standard) was wicked !
Cheers

Oh bitchy
MkIII under brakes was the worst I've driven. back end just slew down the slip road @ 75
only other car I can do that in is my bosses Golf GTi MKIV

Brakes - Leon has monster 312(?) discs straight out of the box. Ibiza has piddly little 280's. Think Leon gets 4 channel ABS too compared to the bargain basement 3 channel system on the Ibiza.
Engine - Leon gets 180bhp motor, Ibiza gets 156bhp.
Leon underpinnings are substantially newer than Ibiza. And with the Leon being a larger car with a longer wheelbase, directional stability should be tons better.

Granted the leon has slightly bigger everything but remember heavier car, longer car, etc etc... so it needs the upgrades to compete with the ibiza!!!!!!! As above states its a pipe and slippers car, "a hot hatch wannabe" where the beeza is a true hot hatch!!!!

Hey, don't get me wrong, I like Ibiza's - I drive one myself, albeit a mk2 2.0 8v. It has a very capable chassis that with a few tweaks makes for an excellent handling little car that I find immense fun to drive.
My first couple of points were in answer to a question about what the differences between the engine and braking systems are. A standard Leon gets a more powerful engine and better brakes straight out of the box - the specs speak for themselves and I don't see how this can be disputed.
Again, the suspension on the mk3 Ibiza dates back to the mk2 Ibiza - this is fact, and as such is also not open to debate. The underpinnings of the Leon have, at their heart, a substantially more recent design.
If anything, my comments on handling/directional stability perhaps emphasises the pipe and slippers comment - it's a universal truth that a bigger car with a longer wheelbase, wider track and more weight will have better directional stability. What this means is that a Leon is probably better suited to motorway work but in the same breath i'd comment that in some circumstances the nimble, flickable Ibiza would be quicker.
I agree with your "true hot hatch" sentiments to a point, and maybe it's a sign that i'm getting a bit old but there's times when a larger car would be better suited than a "true hot hatch" - any car is a compromise after all.

fair comments....
p.s. i cant change my signature ****... i dont want one badly any more cause i got a 20vt now...
I have to agree with G, the suspension is from pre 1993 therefore can't be as good as a modern design

i know ive only just got the ibiza but compared to my old car (dropped 40ml) the cupra is making me sea sick going round corners. It feels like im on a bouncy castle and doesn't feel safe at speed... granted you cant fault the comfort which is what i wanted but is there anything i can do to keep the comfort but loose the instability and wobbling motion???
I think it's especially noticeable in MkIII's
narrow rear track, soft suspension, old design meant for nothing with more than 100brake or so

LOL. This is why I guess the Leon has been consistently listed in magasine 'best handling hatch' categories for the last 2-3 yrs - CCC even reckoned it was the best hatch on a circuit at last years test at Anglesey.
Where's the mentions for Ibiza's ????? All that seems to get said for that is good engine in a outdated chassis that cannot cope with the power.
Now where's that comfy pullover and ovaltine.......
Cheers

Ok lets put it to the test. Me and you at the next trackday, std Leon vs std Ibiza, which is fastest.
I promise to bring my pipe and slippers also.
Cheers

I own a Leon cupra 20vt and an Ibiza cupra 2.0 8v (the wifes)
The ibiza is more fun below 80mph the leon is more fun above,
The Leons brakes are better
The Ibiza has more steering feel but understeers earlier.
The Leon protects more in a crash.
Do you like your licence?
if you do get the Ibiza if you dont then be seduced by the Leon into being naughty.
If I had to choose it would be the Leon although I prefer the appearance of the Ibiza.
my twopence.
