View Full Version : New shape Cupra R
Did anyone else the the new shape LCR racing on channel 4 last night?
Presume you mean the World Touring Car Leon. Not a Cupra R, doesn't exsist, and won't either. Only sporty road-going Leons will be an FR followed by a CUPRA. no R.
Now surely the focus group has put them straight on dropping the "R"?
Not upto them. Honda threw their toys out of the pram.
Honda threw their toys out of the pram.
Just 'cause they were jealous ;)

hummmm
Not sure how that works? You cant register a letter as a trademark. A bit more politics involved me finx!
Its the context, as the two cars are in the same market competing against one another, and trading on the R marque, something Honda marketed first. Happened with Skoda and Ford too, its why you have VRS now instead of the RS as it was originally marketed.
In my opinion, it makes more sense to make the CUPRA the top ranging car, and use FR for the sporty/slighty hotter. It already stands for CUP-RACING anyway.
Why call it CUP-RACING RACING ??
Formula Racing works well, illustrates a feeder series, sporty yet affordable, maybe cut down, lesser spec, but still quick and exciting.
Cup Racing, the crown of motorsport, what you aim for, the top step, the quality, plus the extra power.
Im just thinking like a marketing person, verbal diahorea really :D
Why call it CUP-RACING RACING ??

How come Jaguar keep using "R" on their hot models then if thats the case? I think this Honda business is an urban myth unless someone can show me something to the contrary.
Not competing in the high street against a Civic Type R though is it. ;)
But my opinion, is they realised that CUP RACING RACING is retarded.
Is it true that FQ on the Evo's (eg FQ320) stands for F**king Quick. Someone told me it actually does - am I being wound up here?!

fords have had RS (Rally Sport) and porsche have had RS (Rennsport) for years even though the cars are different classes they have competed head to head in rallying
FQ on the Mitsi's stands for Fujooki Quarazanos the guy who designed the first Evo sport,
OK, how about Cupra SS.....as in s@*+ off a shovel? Although it may upset some Germans...LOL

I'm not sure that the German parent company of Seat would be too keen on the moniker SS!
Aye
No, I dont think ze germans would like that. How about Cupra E (for Extreme!). Then again dont we have enough letters and numbers with the Leon FR TDI PD 150 ?
OK...how about keepin it simple? cupra P and cupra D? lol

I with you on that. It doesn't compare to Skoda vs. Ford's "RS" - we are talking "Cupra R" vs. "Type R" here, just like "RS" and "vRS" are acceptably different.
And why does "R" have to stand for "Racing" anyway? You get motorbikes with several "R"s in their name - surely each one of those doesn't stand for "Racing".
Regardless of what is the accepted truth or not. SEAT have already said in official press releases that future models will be only FR and CUPRA. Unless they decide on a turnaround of strategy, then the next hottest Leon will be a CUPRA.
Unfortunately whatever you think R means, it still means Racing in SEAT's book, look back a few years through SEAT media and find the Cupra R articles, and all is revealed.

Because the hot models of Jags aren't an "R"
It's the difference between XKR and XK R
Now don't tell me you want your next hot Seat to be a CUPRAR
