View Full Version : A question about re-waxing....

Hi all,

I've just started a kind of a 'program' of car care:

- first step: Klasse AIO (done)
- next: Poorboys EX
- third: Nattys Blue paste wax
- top-up: Optimum spray wax

My question is: if I want to repeat this, say, after winter's done, do I need to remove the waxes and what-not I've applied before restarting the process? And if so, what's the best way to do it? (all by hand, BTW - too scared to use polishers etc :D )

Cheers,
Nick.

It's up to you, depends how your paint looks, personally I'd start again with the Klasse come spring time, just keep it washed and topped with Optimum over winter as it contains sealant and wax so should have plenty of protection.

Hi Rob - thanks for the reply. So if I want to start the process over again, do I not need to remove any of the previous layers before applying more Klasse? If I don't, then  as it saves me some graft!

I just had it in my head that I'd need to somehow remove the old before applying new. You can see I'm new to this  , but better to ask than to f**k it up, I always think. You can check out my progress so far in this forum somewhere - not quite on a par with your pics @ your site, but I'm happy with it so far! Most chuffed with how it's hidden the many scratches from rings and bling in the wells behind the door handles - it looked like Mr T has been opening the doors!

You definitely need to remove any outstanding wax layers and I would personally take the AIO off.
Applying the AIO does have some polish action so will take some product off but I'd use a dedicated product myself. eg Poorboys SSR 2.5

Best to use a paint cleaner yes, although AIO itself will clean off most of the wax. I'd rather use a paint cleaner than a swirl remover though, something like P21S paintwork cleanser which says it removes old wax without being too harsh.

Guys I would view AIO as primarily a paint cleaner but one that leaves a little protection and gloss behind. It will strip off ALL of your old wax. If it can remove oxidation like the pic in the otehr thread (red car) then no wax will stand a chance against it.

I was thinking the red car had more done to it than just AIO?
I've never had AIO produce that level of result on it's own.

In the picture you are refering to it was AIO only! Afterwards I did go over it with other products to bring the shine up to an even better level but yep AIO will strip yer wax [B)]

Thanks for the info, chaps - I think I'll just suck it and see on, maybe, say the back bumper in spring, and see how well it comes up. I suppose the main thing is keeping the top surface clean and free of gunk week-on-week through the winter, and when you're up @ 6am every day (with kids), it's no problem having it sparkly by 9am every Sunday!

I didn't, no - it was in pretty good nick; the car had been (probably poorly) polished by the SEAT dealer before I picked it up, as there was the tell-tale white crud in the gaps and seams, roof-bar slots etc. I just paid special attention to fly gunk and whatever, giving the nose and mirrors a go with Poorboy's Bug Squash before using the AIO.

You use a clay bar before polishing if the paint requires it. If I were you Nick I'd clay the car first in the spring - amazing how many tar spots are picked up over the winter. Then check the paint. If you have lots of small scratches you want rid of try Clearkote Vanilla Moose Wax Hand Glaze (this will also strip off old waxes, etc) - this works really well by hand, great if you don't have/won't use a PC. If you don't have many scratches then go for it with the AIO. As Brazo said, this will get rid of old waxes, even when applied by hand. If you have a metallic I'd also switch to EX-P rather than EX, topped with Natty's Blue. :)
