View Full Version : Suspension, suspension, suspension
Hey guys, it’s not long now till I get my Ibiza and I just want to ask about suspension. What I want to know is, what’s the lowest that most have you have gone without affecting ride or handling or the size of wheels you have on your car?
And what is the best set-up to go for, springs, dampers and coilovers?????? I see all these kits advertised for VW's and becuase my car is practically VW anyway, am I correct in assuming that it'll fit too
Your help would be greatly appreciated on the subject
Cheers

I am also a Golf owner at the mo waiting to get my I Ibiza and I am led to believe that the suspension is totally different than the Golf....I am sure that one of the guys like Bill would be able to tell you more.
By the way where did you get your ibiza from?

They are VW underneath.
I think they're a mix of MK2/MK3/Corrado parts. I need to check more into the detail differences, but face value they are identical to Golf based components. I am getting the PSS9 kit next week, so will be able to comment more, when I have all the parts off and can see for myself the differences if any.
There should be spring kits available for the Ibiza anyway. They are getting popular.

Without affecting the ride and handling???
Thats the whole point of getting the kit, you want to affect the ride and handling.
I have the PSS9 kit and it handles very very well in my option... only picked the car up on Saturday and it already had the kit fitted on it so I cannot comment on how it compares to the original suspension... I'm sure Bill will let us all know how it compares when he gets his kit.
I've been taking it fairly easy so far, but its already clear that it corners much better than my lowered 306 did and much better than my standard 205 1.9 GTi! http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
The PPS9 kit is height and damping adjustable... I have the settings recommended by RSD somewhere at home. Something like 30mm lower at front and 40mm lower at back (Seems stange to lower back more than front!).

I am not sure the lower back than front is quite right. I am sure I remember Danny @ RSD saying to me they used spring spacers on another suspension kit to raise the rear with respect to the front. Not lower it.
I will be setting it nose down personally, but not extremely so, probably 10mm or so.
I wonder if some information got crossed in the communication.
Looking forward to getting the PSS9's on. I have had my eye on them since they were released last year. I just did'nt expect to be fitting them to an Ibiza (had the Jetta in mind)
Nice to hear you think it handles better than a 306 or 205 though, as they are benchmark cars for good handling.

Where can i find information and piccies on the PSS9 kit, as by the sounds of it, this is an ideal kit for the Ibiza.

Try RSD or Euro Car Parts, or just buy a car magazine, flic through it and you'll see an advert.
Not much detail on the spec I've ever seen though. If you've seen any coil over kit, you know what they look like.
Rear adjustment is via the top, and front is via the bottom. - talking struts and shocks here http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif
PSS kit is ride height adjustable only, PSS9 kit is 9 position damping adjustable as well as ride height.
Ben> Did you get your info with your car? Add anything to this?
try this link> http://www.bilstein.com/products/sspage.html
or http://www.bilstein.de/produkt/PSS9%20.pdf if your German is any good. (mine is'nt)

High praise indeed, I used to own a 1.9 205 and have driven the 306 GTi6. Both manage to combine superb handling with a reasonably fluid ride.
My only niggle with my 20V T is the ride quality - it seems (even) worse than my 16V although the roads between me and the local supermarket are on a par with Afghanistan.
If it can improve the ride over uneven surfaces AND handling then I'll order a set of PSS9s in a flash http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Looking forward to Bills impressions.

I recommend you get Bilstein PSS9. Be carefull its not the same as a Golf. The Golf Suspensión is similar to Leon, not Ibiza.

Bill,
Yeah I got the manuals with the PSS9 kit, but haven't really read through it yet.
The settings that Amethyst done (As recommended to them by RSD) feel good. Theres one roundabout that I go on everyday and I used to scweal, understeer, oversteer and everything around everyday in the 205 and now in the Ibiza it just sticks... not a sound, slide or anything, even then I accidently let the turbo kick in!
OK, I've not found the limit yet and I'm not sure how the car behaves when it reaches the limit (Progressive slide or Clio V6 style sudden spin without warning???), but I can say that I'm already taking corners that were beyond the 205s limit!!!

Bill appear to know what he's talking about and he's thrown the Ibiza around a track so it'll be interesting to hear his opinions.

Could you tell me how much the kit cost and how much it cost including fitting, as my best option would be to buy it from RSD and get them to fit it.

Amethyst supplied and fitted the PSS9 kit for £1000.
I probably could of got it done slightly cheaper elsewhere but because I got it all put on the car before I picked it up its all covered under the cars 3 year warantee.

Flapper,
Yes, Neil said that they dropped it 3" at one point... may be a good setting for a track day but as it is I only have about 5mm clearance to get up onto my driveway and into the garage!
