I wanna put 17s on my beezer cupra but i dont want to sacrifice performance, I also want to go a bit wider extra grip etc. Would 17x7x40 be ok? a to fit and b to keep performance.
------------------
If you're talking about the Leon, they will fit and they'll look wonderful!
In Greece the 20VT comes with 55,r16, so you can safely move on to seventeens with 45. 40 will look better though! You can fit 225/45/17 like I want to fit (when I finally get the car) and the handling will be great..
The 17s will marginally slow you down but just a bit. Its worth it though because a)the handling will be great, b)looks...
from what I've seen on another Leon, the drop in performance would be "equal" to 5bhp... It would feel like you have 5horses less. You decide.

Harvey,
Yes, from what I have heard 17" wheel on an Ibiza DOES affect your acceleration as the rolling radius of the wheel is different. You could in theory adjust your Final Drive gear ratio to compensate for the extra wheel size, but that would involve a gearbox mod!
Anyway, if you just want wider tyres for the extra grip then you can get 16" wheels just as wide, fore xample, you said that you want 17x7x40 wheels, well why not get 16x7x45? They probably don't look quite as nice as 17"s but they will give you just as much grip.
Thanks,
Ben

Im gonna have to think about it.
------------------
the 40 has a bit more grip than the 45 because the rubber is less so when you're cornering it bends less..

So no 18's for the ibiza when I get it then, I guess its 17's and slam....any ideas please let me know?

I've just fitted 17's to my new cupra, the handling's wicked and the rides even better. I'll post a pic of my car soon, the details as follows. 17's tyre 40,205 goodyear F1 Eagles. Nice

Migzy - Ibiza Cupra or Leon?
So does it ride better over bumpy roads on 17s - I thought the opposite would be true of 17s due to the lower profile rubber they are shod with.
------------------
So which is the best profile tyre to use then because the first thing that I am gonna get is some 17's?

I've got 225 35's on 7 x 17s.
Rolling radius is better but the cost of the tyres is quite a bit more than the 205's.
Usually you have to get them on special order.

225 section tyres on a 7x17 wheel!!
I hope you chose that yourself, and not advised by a alloy wheel shop...cos that is ridiculous!!!!!
I'm surprised the tyres don't fall off.....cos they should be on 8" wide rims as a minimum!!!
Oh well......learn new things everyday i guess!
------------------
I have spoken to friend in the tyre business and he has told me that it should not make any diffrence apart from the ride might be a little harder, cause the actual diamiter of the tyre would be the same size aslong as you use 205/40.....hope this help
On paper the rolling radius of 17s with 40 profile tyre is about 0.4% more than 16s with 45 profile tyres... but in practive if you put the 2 side by side the 17s have significantly more radius than the 16s.
This means 2 things... the acceleration wont be quite as good (Unless you compensate by adjusting the final drive in the gearbox) and your speedo will be (even more) inaccurate!
Ben
tyre equations
195/45/VR 16
195 = 195mm wide
45 = profile (which is % of the width) (nb if none listed its standard 80)
VR = speed rating (next up is W i think)
16 = inch size diameter of rim
1. take the diameter of the rim and convert to metric
2. divide the width by the % (profile)
add together for overall height of the tyre including rim divide by 2 for the radius
if i remember it should be roughly 90 - 100 ish or thereabouts
use it to compare different size rims and tyres to see if speedo/acceleration/overall size will be affected
hope it helps , if ive got summat wrong , CALL A TYRE GUY :):):)
as for the J measurement of a rim , thats the INCH measurement of the WIDTH of the rim , i cant for the love of god remember what the window size is for matching widths of rim to tyre but i think its within 25mm either way , ill check to be sure
watch this space
convert the wheel sizes 6J * 15 to metris first , makes it all easier to work out

Erm...
inches to millimeters is inch x 25.4.
6x25.4 = 152.4mm (15.24cm)
sorry Flapper.
Bill
:(
sorry bill it was late going last nite
i meant convert EACH part of the wheel size that is imperial to metric
ie
6" width
15" wheel size
do them seperately
sorry m8 :)

Opps!
Sorry bud.... wrong end of the stick my end...
thought you were multiplying 6J rim by 15 to get metric mm's...
Mixed units eh! Don't you just love them?
