View Full Version : Fitting aftermarket HU Leon...errmmm....

Having never fitted a HU before, I'm having a one of those days when I'm sat at the back of the class with a 'D' hat on  :ban:

Removed Aura HU no problem (now sold): HU keys, pop, Removed 2 torx (sp?) screws and kept them. These are screwed back into place incase I needed them.

How do I actually physically fit the Pioneer (P70BT) into the Leon? Reading through the installation manual has confused me!

I'm assuming that this is a DIN Front-mount install? That I use the HU metal holder? and use the Rubber Bush+Screw?

My understanding is that I need to use the metal holder. If thats the case, how does it fit into the dashboard? No matter what I try, it won't go in. Keeps getting caught on the plastic "side rails", and seems to be bending out of shape if I push it with force. The more I try, the more plastic shavings I create!!

Or should I be removing something before attempting to fit the metal holder, like a factory fit mounting bracket?

It must need the metal holder as the unit is loose without it, and it wouldn't be very secure!

I know it should be simple....... but...... am I missing something?

And I thought the more taxing part would be making a homebrew AUX-In IP-Bus cable so I could use my mobile as an MP3 player in the car :( (not tested yet, but cable is made)

Take a stanley knife to the plastic ribs in the dash hole so the cage fits properly mate ;)

Thanks. Plastic ribs on left and right sides? Then put the cage into place, and push the top and bottom cage tabs 90 degrees to secure it into place?

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this? I did do a search :)

You shouldn't need to remove any screws.

You will need the Cage if it's a std HU.

There is no factory fitting mount AFAIK.

Do you have the surround to make the unit the same size of trhe Aura from the front (cosmetic only really)

The cage should go right on in....try getting the first bit in the gradually easing it in chekcing all sides for fouling as soon as you find it won't go in.

The cage is secured by popping up or down the (triangular) bit od metal once the cage is fully in. maybe these are stopping the cage going in?

No it's actually the ribs on the top and bottom that catch, the sides are fine. Every Leon I've fitted a HU to ( and that's a few ) has needed a minor trim of each of the thin ribs on the top and bottom.

Cage now fits. Always cautious when it comes to my car, especially if it involves butchering something to fit :) Just got to select the appropriate tabs now.

In answer to previous questions, I bought a fitting kit from Nexxia, for simplicity.

Thanks again

Glad you got it sorted. Sorry couldnt post earlier as Im at work. Basically, I just slide the metal cage into the fascia adapter and then into the hole and bent various tabs to hold it in place. All very secure and didnt require any trimming, think I just got lucky.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do with my P70BT :D

those bloody ribs. I need to pop my HU out and I hadn't thought of that. My cage has never fitted that convincingly because of them.

Is it best to take dash out or cut in situe Pete?
