OK so now us Brits are experiencing some sort of summer I would be interested in how people are finding their chipped cars, has anyone had theirs resort to safe mode whilst in a traffic jam or on the road during these amazingly high (for the UK) temperatures of 25 degress plus?

As far as i noticed, std ibizas dont really suffer from performance degradation in hot weather. Chipped ones do BIG time! When engine is cold, it flies, when it's (very) hot it feels a bit poooo - or am i got used to it that fast ? ;)

not had mine go into safe mode, but yep hot weather, poor performance(well not poor, as in nova poor) I know this sunny stuff is all nice for bringing out the small clothes (totty everywhere), but please bring back the doom and gloom for my boy, he's not happy.

my leon cupra feels slow in hot weather when its grippy and feels strong in cold damp weather when its slippy..how bizzare life is:jog:

I think its not only the Seat cars that suffers from hot weather..

All turbo cars works better when the weather is cold..

Just test your car at the noon and then wait for the evening...

Big difference

well mine heats up quicker in hot weather and in winter I can be stopped in traffic and the fan won't come on. the intercooler water spray helps a lot when the weather is warm.

I think i got used to the preformance by now
i got my chip as soon as summer arrived
tempretures jumped by 10c on that day!!
heat makes a big diffrence but so as all turbo's around
scoobies are down under also.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I guess we'll have to stick to driving at night, when it's nice and cool....

It isnt only tubby that don't like the heat, my last car (Megane Coupe 2.0) didnt like hot weather, but also the hot weather really affects my mates Honda Integra Type R, Mr VTEC dont like the heat.

Hot air effects any car, as combustion prefer colder dense air. My Ibiza is running fine in this weather, went like sh*t off a shovel last Thurs at the Blyton track day on full boost, weather sunny quite warm.

35c over here.......:(
though i cant complain really, car go nice but feels somewhat
atmospheric.

can anyone suggest what effect Humidity have on preformance?
hot humid air that is.

Surfer_D
18-07-2002, 13:43
It's logicaly why! Because the air is hotter the density is lover so the engine gets less air in the turbo as in the night or after rain. Have you ever noticed how do our turbos fly after the rain.

It doesn't matter it it's chipped or not.... Mine is standard and I have the same problems. All cars do, but in the turbos you can fell it a little bit more since it's more air depandent.

Hope this helps

How about compansation?
i heard that the ECU will compansate more boost on stock cars
when its hot.
while chipped cars are allready on full boost all time.
so the loss is felt better on the chipped ones?
this make any sense?

Tony_Essex
18-07-2002, 15:28
That could make some sense Ozzy, as I haven't really noticed any drop in performance, but have noticed the whistle form the turbo more, but maybe that because my windows are open more in nice weather?

I do however notice a difference when I don't use Optimax, I feel I should get out and walk sometimes :(

More hot air in, and compressed further and harder (chipped) makes an already hot induction air charge hotter. Less 02 per bang (ie less volume).. less power.
Sad but true.

Funny, I wouldn't dream of opening the windows. Just let the AC do its thing. Any reason why you prefer the windows open?

Cheers

Ah yes, well I only keep the windows open when it isn't too hot. Or I want a better look at the scenery, as the poor old car is a bit covered in dead bugs right now...lots of little dead black things all over my shiney silver car, I now remember why all my previous cars have been black

I have to say I am a window man as well, I like AC but I also like driving with the windows open, get some fresh air. I like AC when stuck in traffic thou

Just my 5p's worth

Just my 5p's worth

preformance loss is felt in my case,i'll do anything for some extra beef.....:D

so i try and avoid the A/C at most times, but not when its 38c...

Fair enough. I was just wondering, obviously there are pro's and cons of each.

......and as for silver cars and bugs.....tell me about it!

Cheers guys

was not bad tonight. went to braehead with my new tyres. no wheel spin in second like I usually get in the wet.

dave

my car is terrible for wheel spin in 2nd gear, wet roads, i dont if the tyres are shit or not, p6000's.

Regarding to the original topic;

We got a drop of 10C in temperature and my chipped car feels a lot faster now. Sun, dont come back!

Lucky north people :)

Here we have 36-41C

I think its dangerous when having your car boosts for a big time...

and the fact the a/c is on because its so hot all day
even makes preformance worse!!
aircon in the car is fitted this side and is a stronger one then
standard due to the climate on this side of the world
so preformance loss is felt big time.

My LEON TDi seems to go better in warm weather! Any scientific reason why diesel should be better than petrol in warm conditions? I'd be interested to know!

have not noticed any difference in power. boost has remained the same. Friend in London has teh say water spray for intercooler and he felt a difference using it in hot weather

is that easy to retofit??
where is it possible to find that system?

How about a second 'window washer' bottle, so that you can run water from that direct to the 'cooler. A simple relay in teh dash with a switch & bob's your uncle.

Should be able to get most of the bits from a breaker for very little. All you would need to buy is probably a nice switch, some piping & something on the end of the pipe to 'spray' [as opposed to dribble] water.

Its normal to have a performance loss in hot weather, since when cold, air is denser and so more oxygen is fed into the cylinders.

You could see a big difference if you put a second intercooler, or changing the existing one for a bigger & more efficient.

Water spray is the best solution since this makes the intercooler's gathered heat dissapear (because it makes the water evaporate)so Ozzy, your friend is right!

You brits, don't complain!! Your summer is just our early spring!!! Your car might complain a little bit, but there are some other nice things you can do during the summer as well!! :)

As an example last night tempretures went down to 24
as i was driving north with a friend and his GTI.
we were flying!!,and you noticed the large amount of 20VT's
(mostly ibiza) flying all around us in happiness as 24 compare
to usual 36-40 makes the 20VT's what they should be.
my car was finelly breathing better and i was able to climb
up the revs easy (up to 6,500 revs on very hot day is hard)

TIA now bare in mind this os for a different car and I am still playing around with nozzels and direction so the nozzels is not fixed permenantly at the mo. you have to spray before boosting and during or the intercooler will not cool down. It cost me less than £10 to buy the stuff. It consists of a one way valve, some tubing, a adapter to join the pipes and a twin nozzels jets. even if it don't actually do anything it sounds cool to have one :D

to work it I disconnect the washer spray and then just work the spray from inside the car. my bottle hold 7.5L so I have plenty of water. my wippers don't go when I spray which is a bonus. it is quite easy to rig up a pump and button though.

I like the last action shot there :)

even though the beeza is turbo less, i'm gonna make a 'radiator spray'

thats what I am going to do also. just going to fit a T-piece. keep the temp down in traffic and at crail :D

also temp rises more now I fitted bleed so should help keep temps down

It will be bloody hard to reach the intercooler on the 20VT with
a nozzle the intercooler is way down and hidden.
and on the other side of the battary.

21-07-2002, 12:48
SHould be OK ozzy, after spending a good few hours under Sauls, I reckon you could easily run a small pipe down there - might be easier to whip off the bumper though?

M

ozzy
21-07-2002, 14:57
Yes Mark i havnt even managed to see what the intercooler
looks like ....
cant even stick my hand its so tight in there ,taking out the bumper is only way to do it for me.

Vibrio, how do you operate it from inside??
are you using the stock pump and have given up on your windows washers? or is it a diffrent pump being switched on
together with window washer??
or am i completely lost??...:D

vibrio
22-07-2002, 10:50
at the moment it's windows or intercooler for the spray. good thing is that my wipers don't go when you spray. a switch would not be that hard to rig up
