I am looking to get a turbo diesel, I like the VW but Im told that Seats are a smart alternative as you get the same car without the tosser image and save a few quid into the bargain.

At the moment I have a small hatch that is great fun but slightly underpowered and I would like a more sensible car with a bit more power. My car has large exhaust, custom air intakes and various power mods which make the car more fun but don’t really make a massive amount of difference to the power. The downside of the mods mean that it is very loud and all the tuning seems to be a lot of hassle compared to a td that can be chipped to achieve 30% gains. Is it really that simple?

I know that the 1.9 TD engine comes in various power varieties from 90bhp right up to 150. Are there any differences in the engine, stronger parts, bigger injectors, bigger turbo?

With chipping in mind, what should I look for / avoid? What peroformance figures could I expect?

I've owned both VWs & SEATS, the difference in my opinion are minimal.

Yes it is that simple!!

The 90hp I think is already out of production. I've also heard the 110 will be as well, seems that VW will be using the PD engines only.
There are differences between the engines but I really can't help you with that. As far as performance figures:

110 can be chipped to 140-150
75PD to 100
115PD to 140-150
130PD to 160
150PD to 175-180

Is chipping really that simple? Yes.

Which is of course an over-simplification, but remapping TDIs is certainly easier than a petrol. Since diesels take a full "lungful" of air every stroke, and you only adjust the amount of fuel injected, you don't have the task of matching fuel/air mix under various load conditions to retain stochiometric mix like you do in a petrol. Makes it much easier.

Various differences from 90hp to 150hp model ~ try a search if you're interested.

you will definately save 10-15% on seats over vw's for not that different a motor. i would suggest get the 90bhp or 110bhp motor because for what you pay extra for the 130 or 150bhp models you can just chip the lower models for a fraction of the cost e.g

i could have bought a w reg ibiza 1.9tdi 130bhp for £11K with approx 9K miles on the clock and it was a sweet motor with extra trimmings and alloys but i bought my w reg cordoba with 15K miles standing at 90bhp for £8.5K (after hefty bartering!!!) then spent £800 on a set of 17" rims and £300 on a chip which took it to 122bhp then £95 on a pipercross induction kit which gave me 6bhp or so. total being little over £9.5K with big wheels and just as fast as the 130 standard!!!

the benefits are you can customise your motor as you want it as apposed to what they want you to have, unless you have limitless pots of money to spend, in which case you'd be buying jags and DB7's

I've had a couple of run with chipped 110 golfs & an A4 and non came close. The only thing that came close (well actually about equal) was a 130hp A3. Engine wear in my opinion is also debateable.

sorry to bring up an old subject.

Is there anyone here running modded td engines?

Have you added chips/injectors/interccolers etc?

Have you noticed better fuel economy and what kind of power increases midrange? Any idea of the figures?

130PD can be chipped to 180+ (see the other thread where APR have posted results).

A W reg Ibiza does not come as std with 130bhp, it would have been the 110tdi (I guess).

There is only one APR chipped Ibiza at the mo' (unless they have already chipped somebody else), so I don't think you will get much help. You could look on audi boards (but eg. audi-sport nobody seems to have chipped their 130tdi yet either).

I've chipped my W reg cordoba 90bhp tdi to 122bhp, and next i plan on upgrading the deisel injectors to .205's to give me an extra 25-30 bhp or so!! should be fun!!

:D

Im probably looking at a 110 engine as I think it can easily be upgraded to 130 spec much cheaper than actually buying a 130 engine in the first place, but I know that parts other than the engine like the gearbox may make a 130 a better buy.

Is the chip and injector size the only real differances?

Ive heard figures of 250,000 miles quoted for these engines even with mods, which would make spending a little extra on it a good investment - how relistic is this?

i'm still learning, but if you want some seriously detailed information check out www.tdiclub.com because they are serious tdi heads, and know everything there is to know about td's. go to tdi power enhancements on the front page then follow the links. it might be useful to look at the tdifaqs link at the top of the page as well, very interesting. from what i have read the difference between the 110 and the 130 is the injectors, but, i've also read the the turbo is different also, still not 100% sure personally, but you'll find all your answers via the link. i would definately get the 110 over 130 to save a bit of cash, but, if you have the green available get the 130 and get it chipped. average figures of a chipped 130, is 174bhp @ approx 295ft/lbs torque!!!

see this link for the mpegs of the chipped 130 and watch the speedo closely, the quality is a bit crappy and the downloads take a little while but still worth watching!!

hope it helps
