Hi All,
First post - new to Seat owning, and a bit of an ICE novice...
Last week i bought an Ibiza 2.0 Cupra Sport 16v (1999). Very nice looking car (diamond White), and excellent fun to drive.
I wasnt too impressed with the head unit, but thought I could quite easily slot my Kenwood CD head unit in there. When i mentioned this to the sales guy he told me that the wiring is all already there for a boot changer. I have had a look under the carpet in the boot but cant see anything. I would rather keep the factory fitted cassette head unit and have a boot changer if its as easy as just plugging it in, but have gone for the Kenwood for the time being.
Any ideas? Was the salesman talking out of his backside?

There is another question i have about the wiring of the Kenny but i guess i should wait and see what response i get from this first...

...dont want to show my ignorance this early on in the game!!!

Many thanks in advance!
James

16V eh, nice motor, welcome to the forums

For your changer cable, look under the SIDE carpets , if its not been used before it will probably be buried quite a way back, near to the rear seat backs.

As for wiring in your Kenny CD, wot model number is it?

You can usually pick up an ISO loom from your local halfords, and from there on in, its easy work.

Gis' a shout if you get stuck or need more info

Hi Saul, thanks for your reply. Im well pleased with the car (went out and took some photos today if anyone wants to see!!) Would have prefered a newer one, but the girlfriend wouldnt have let me spend that much money!! nothing like being under the thumb!

Thanks for the info re: the boot changer cables. Any idea which side!!?

As I am using the Kenny for the time being, I will press on with my query on that one. Its not a new model, but a KDC-6080. I was amazed how easy it was to wire up. The plugs that went into the back of the old one fitted straight into the back of the loom that came with the Kenwood. Problem is, there was one wire with nowhere to go, and that was the 'constant' power line. I guess the SEAT head unit was constantly powered so the wire that went to the plug thing had power to it constantly. The wire it joins to in the Kenwood loom is designed i think to go to the ignition power.

Not sure if that makes sense, but basically the stereo works when the engine is on, but when i turn it off it looses it radio presets and i have to bung the code back into it.

I was wondering, can i just put the two power wires from the Kenny together, or should i disconnect the 'ignition' wire, and somehow connect the constant power cable (which has a female socket all of its own) to the plug that was in the car?

As you can tell by my lingo, im a rookie, and i dont want to blow too many fuses sorting this out!

I also dont really want to cut any wires, but realise i may have to!

Phew!! thats my rambling over!!

Hi Jimmy,

On my beeza I couldn't connect it to the ignition on a non std headunit, so I connect the Red & yellow power wires together on the head unit side so it's always on, as long as you connect it to the correct 'always on' wire.

If you're about on Saturday, I'm passing thru to Waterlooville to visit my Mum if you want me to stick a voltmeter between wires so you know which are which?

There should be two feeds on the cars' ISO plug from the loom - one switched with ignition, one permanent. The funny thing is that while the ISO state there should be pins for both on the plug, they don't specify which way round they should be. I found my Sony headunit had them wired the "wrong way round" so the head unit would lose its' settings when I turned off the ignition. Swapping the red and yellow (I think) within the head unit loom should sort it out.

Cheers Mark that sounds like it would sort the problem. I kinda thought that was what i would have to do, but wasnt sure if it would damage either the car of the stereo.
I am around on Saturday so if you could check it out that would be a real bonus.
What sort of time would suit you?

Best thing would be to drop me a line - james.memery@ntlworld.com and suggest a time and place. Its my home email address so I wont see anything untill the evenings.

Thanks a lot for your offer of assistance. Really encouraging to know people are out there who are prepared to help!
Cheers
James

RE: Hopkinsgm's info on the +ve wires... I cant be sure but i remember there being only 1 +ve wire going to the loom from the car. This is what caused me the confusion. I think i might have to put the two power lines from the stereo into the one wire to the car.
Hopefull Mark will be able to confirm this, and save me blowing myself up!
Thanks
James
