View Full Version : 3 year old car & MOT's/warranty/assistance - quick advise needed
Hi all
My car will be 3years old on 7th Feb. This means that the warranty runs out on 7th feb. This means that my Seat Assistance runs out on 7th Feb. :censored: totally didnt realise/forgot about it.....
Now, am I right in saying I am breaking the law driving my car after the 7th unless it has an MOT certificate or I am on my way to an MOT place?
Basically, my plan is to get the car MOT'd before the 7th - that way if it should fail on anything then I can get it sorted under warranty or have time to get the problem sorted.
With respect to Seat Assist - I am certain my missus had a letter from the AA recently saying that she could add another family member for £5.00. Might have to take them up on this, although not sure if I just ring them up and ask....
Also, what have people got in the way of warranties? Anyone opted for non-dealer warranties like AA/RAC etc? Any advise/costs etc would be great.
Thanks

If you are 'on your way' to an MOT centre then you will have to prove that the car was booked in for it's MOT if you get pulled.
As for warranties, I think th AA do a very good one at a good price, you'd have to check them out, might have details on their website.
Stay well clear of warrantywise though!
ok thanks for the advise.
One thing to say is that I wouldnt drive after that date unless on the way to the MOT anyway.... Hardly use my car at the moment
I might be teaching you to suck eggs, but some people don't realise, if you take your v5 with you to the MOT test then the year the certificate runs for starts on 7th feb instead of the test date.
Yeah, if i get it done before the 7/2 then the cert still runs from 7/2.... thats not a worry... the problem is getting it done in Jan with the little time i have :(
You can get your MOT done a month before it's due so that way if any faults are oicked up you can get them done under warranty. Well thats what i'm planning on doing in December :p
There are plenty of arrive and drive type MOT places. So book off 2 hours on a sat morning or go straight after work
forgot to update this thread :
Had my MOT yesterday, just within the month allowed before its due.
Car PASSED with flying colours - nothing even close to failing on it :)
I actually turned revo OFF for the MOT, not sure if it would make a difference or not, but then wondered what a 4bar FPR on std code would do, but passed fine anyway.
Only bloody thing is, my V5 with the DVLA is wrong :(
When the cert. came out of the machine (all automated computerised now) it said SEAT IBIZA! WTF? lol - I own a LEON! Only other thing I worry about is the fact that my ENGINE NUMBER is missing from the V5 as well, but that was down to my car being an import and paperwork being filled in before they had the car in front of them.
So, garage is phoning DVLA on monday to get it sorted out. I need to find my engine number to give em asap.
Anyone know where i can find the engine number?
OK - found a number on my cambelt cover:
german translation reads: AUQ XXX XXX Identification number.
I assume thats the one - 6 numbers doesnt seem long enough tho.

mines 6 digits too, how many auqs do you think they made? millions?
lol - sorry brendy i didnt explain myself fully.
On the V5 doc they have the box to make ammendments to such things as engine number etc. they give a box thats 20 chars long! That must be for all the ford cars tho ;) (Common as muck!)
6 digits is cool then - was more worried that i had found a different number and not the engine number, but thanks for confirming that mate!

On the Warranty front, what's the score with a modified car and warranties?
Obviously with SEAT you are at the mercy of the dealer but most of the time they'll do the work as SEAT UK is paying.
I would imagine with aftermarket warranties, they will be a lot more particular about wanting to know the exact condition of the car before authorising work. As with most things they'll happily take your money but won't be so courteous when it comes to THEM paying out (think car insurance).
does anyone specialise in warranties for modified cars???
tbh i have had a look around and I doubt you will find anything. They will probably need to verify who fitted the modification, they would have to inspect the car to do this. They will need to know how long modification has been on for etc etc....
its a lot of hassle. I just think if you modify your car you won't worry about warranty. If something goes wrong you will probably look into an aftermarket replacement part anyway (clutches, turbo's, etc etc)
If anyone does offer a warranty for modified cars do let me know tho! Would be interesting to see what they do/say!

Pabs I think you'll find the Seat Assist is actually 5 years cover, mine certainly is on my June 2003 Cupra. You may wish to check with Seat UK.
To be honest I don't really care in any case since I already have personal AA membership for my bike which would cover the car as well.
I just have to get the MOT when mine gets its annual service in June.
