Hi all,

I have been in contact with someone direct from Schrick cams in Germany asking what is the ideal cam for my setup of car. I own a GTI 8V. He says the cam i require is and i quote:

"OK then for your engine there would be the (our art.no.): 014 01 681-01
with 268° Duration CRA I/E; Peak Timing 113°; Valve lift at TDC 1,2mm;
estimated power-increase ca. 8-10% at higher rpm. It´s a good road-cam
we can recommend. Price for the camshaft: 250€ without V.A.T.
But as we´re only selling to companys, garages, etc. you´ll have to look
for someone who could order it for you. By the way we recommend using
of new original valve-springs or some of schrick. "

Anyone know what all that technical stuff means??

Any help is much obliged?

And how much is 250 euros??

Fitting a performance cam in an otherwise standard head can be very dissapointing. The cam would yield most gains when fitted into a gas flowed cylinder head. 268 is fairly mild spec, but not the mildest. You should also have your engine remapped to suit the cam otherwise gains will not be maximised.

So if i am going to get the cam fitted, you are saying it is best to get the head ported and flowed at the same time?

Also i hear a 268 degree cam is correct for every day driving, improving in performance but not making it horrible to drive as a rally cam would make it?

I have had quotes of £450 to fit the cam and £600 to flow the head along with £250 with the ecu to be re-mapped? Are these good prices?

All help is much appreciated!

268 are not the mildest, you can get 258 or 260's. 268's are nto mad though and a good midway spec.

I would always advise a gas flowed head first, then cam and remap to optimise it.

Prices are a bit high for an 8v flowed head. Cam install is not difficult, but on a hydraulic follower head I would also fit new followers same time as the cam.

But any one of the VW mags and look through the adverts for 8v Gti veedubs. It will give you a good guide.

The general prices you mention are certainly on the higher end of the scale.

Thanks for the advice, so if the costs are a bit on the high side, where would you suggest i go to get this work done?
