The standard grills take 4 x 6 inch speakers. If you started cutting away at the shelf and modified it to fit larger units, theoretically you are governed by the strength of the shelf, bearing in mind that a larger speaker will generate a lot more vibration.
That's why I opted to use the Infinitys I have in the standard grills. I guess it depends whether you're trying to really increase sound pressure in the entire car or use the rears for fill, so the stereo sound stage is actually in front of you rather than you being somewhere in the middle of it. Modding the shelf to get decent acoustics would require a lot of effort.
It's kind of like the Richardson's slogan in that sound performance is just a question of how much time and money you have.
If you do go for modding the shelf, keep us all up-to-date with your progression. You might start a trend!
Cheers,
when i got my cordy i hacked bitz of metal etc away to fit my dls 7/10s in sounds good well worth the aggro so tunes wise ive now got uprated fronts with tweeters rears four channel amp running them plus two 15s run by a mono block its a bit rattly at times
15s? Bloody hell I bet you can feel them!
My next car will have something a little special in it. I'm kind of putting better stuff into each car I get, so gradually as time goes by, I'll have something formidable, and probably something good enough for a sound off in a couple of years time. At the minute, it sounds pretty good for the little bit I got!
