Comparing the cars I was very sceptical of liking the Golf as I'm a big fan of the Leon. I know the standard golf as often get to drive a MK4 1.6 auto SE, which I like but lacks handling and performance but does have a feel good factor to it.
I was surprised how good the Golf handled - what the brochure doesn't make clear is that the Golf in GT spec has stiffer suspension, the steering and brakes felt sharper too. However it doesn't have the 'sports chassis' which even more sporty and lowered and reserved for the GTI turbo (and GT TDI 150bhp) and up.
To sum up I thought that the Golf in GT spec a better car overall than the Leon TDI SE, especially with the awesome punch of all that torque (traction control was needed several times!). The handling is good but not as good as the Leon - there is very little road feel. The interior finish is slightly higher grade.
Has anyone else driven Golf and Leon, what do u think?
