View Full Version : V5 owners with Sat NAv
Been having some hassle insuring the Sat Nav unt this week. Maybe something you need to check out.

I do not think I would insure my sat nav over and above my statndard insurance. The item is a standard fit on my model and as such they are aware of it and took on that risk when accepting my contract. They should have stated at the time anything that was not covered under contract (as in your excess).
I think I would be writing to Top Gear, Watchdog and everyone else I could think of if the worst happens, I think there would be enough worried owners with sat nav units to make a fight of it (probably lots of lawyers).
Thanks for the warning
It all comes down to whether your insurer classes the unit as audio and if they do whether they place a limit on how much audio cover they provide. In my experience they all class it as audio and so if (as many do) there is a limit on the policy of betwen £500 and £1,000 then thats all you would get. I don't think you would get anymore money from them however much you shout. If they have a clear limit in your policy document then I don't see what you could do about it.
You would need to prove that it wasn't audio. They would argue that is is an expensive radio which also happens to navigate you to your destination. You would have to argue that it is a navigational system which happens to also play music.
I think the fact that it fits in the dashboard where a radio cassette is normally fitted, plugs into the CD changer, plays the radio by being connected to the cars speakers makes it hard to argue it is not audio.
