View Full Version : Helpppppp!!!!
Does anyone know what will remove masking tape residue.
Just "eyebrowed" my headlight protectors and the masking tape has left a residue after only 2 hours.
Please help!!! :head:
Ronson lighter fluid (or similar). I use it on photographs to remove finger prints, glue etc. I've seen it used on negatives too and if it doesn't harm them, it won't harm anything (unless you set alight to it!).
Cheers Mike,
I've got Hammerite thinners and that works but it will take off the Hammerite Black paint too :head:
Alcohol wipes would not touch it.
Methinks best to wait for Hammerite to cure and then attack masking tape residue with thinners or lighter fuel. Must remember not to spark up a fag whilst doing it !
It'll take it off a treat Bri. Use cotton wool, as paper tissues or towels can leave a white residue if you rub too much. The lighter fuel takes off the glue onto the wool and any excess on the car, just evaporates.
Rodger that, cheers Mike.
BTW, I've only "browed" the acrylic headlamp protectors which clip on in front of the headlights, another guinea pig mission!
Not totally sure if this will work but I'll say it anyway...
you could try heating the glue with a hair dryer and then rubbing the residue off.
- A mate of mine once used petrol to revome the residue left after he de-badging his car.
Eyebrowed?
these protectors plastic?
Any harsh chemicals such as cellulose thiners or xylene based products will fog/melt the plastic
try an alcoholic based product or white spirit
P.S. I lernt this the hard way with airfix kits;)
Bri
The best thing ive seen and used is that clay bar my mate had, can get it from halfords.
Wet it slightly then rub it over whatever you want moving and it comes off with ease, including airbag window stickers that wouldnt come off with a knife!!!!
gets the thumbs up from me
Cheers all.
Stu, these tectors are made of some good gear. I've already used thinners on them yesterday and no fogging or melting etc. I was worried that even the Hammerite paint might melt them, let alone the thinners!
nn, up at 2am, work.
is that spray or brush on?
Painted the inside of the headlamp protectors Stu so as to leave a perfect finish on the visible side.
All sorted now, cotton wool and thinners did the trick,
Cheers all for the advice.

Reminds me of a mate's dad who had a collection of about 40 cigarette lighters. He was sat opposite me one day refilling them all. I picked one up and innocently lit it up.
Whooofffff, he went up in a bloody great fireball as all the gas had squirted out and accumalated around him as he refilled them.
I was a bit pissed and :fag:ed at the time and peed myself laughing :laff: as he rolled around on the floor trying to put himself out, which he did eventually!
He were'nt very impressed.
Got them put back on the car now, they look pukka! :D

Reminds me of a garden incinerator and a gallon of unleaded when my grandfather died:devil:
