Bloody hell, look at all the new features in this forum! :)

Anyway, popped into Castle Combe on my way back from Amethyst... nice to meet those that I was...

Castle Combe seemed pretty cool, but with only 1000 miles on my clock I though it would be best to wait until next time.... and what happened to Duncan?

I watched Lee and Duncan set off around the track and only Lee came around... after 6 laps they rad flagged the race and sent the rescue van out. Rumours spread that his wheel had fallen off (Or was falling off)!!!!

Firstly, I hope he was alright,
Secondly, hope the car isn't too damaged (Obviously something has broken),

Anyway got the full story... I had to leave just after that race.

BTW, your all a bunch of nutters! :) You scared me sh*itless just watching!!! Not much runoff on the corners is there? You lose it on the corner and you'll destroy your car!!!

The RSD van was cool... it was funny to see a Tranny sized van keeping ahead of modded Golfs, Audi TTs etc!!! :p :D

Tony with his T4 transporter van is an abosulute nutter!

TDi 130bhp, 200+ lbs/ft of torque, adjustable suspension, 17's with low profile tyres, it was mega stable going thru the bends!

He said thru the chicanes he got it rather sideways, and as a result, was covering the majority of track so no one could pass him!!!

The RSD demo golf had 2mm of pad left when the guest driver called a halt to the proceedings!

think he must have done over 20 sessions!!!

Top day out though!

Ben, you will join us when your cars loosend up!! hehehe

I am still alive and so is the car, the wheel didn't come off all together but there was only two loose bolts left holding the wheel on very worrying considering the speed I would have been entering the next corner. But could have been a hell of a lot worst did you see the two Golfs DOOHH! :( :(

It also happened about a month ago going very slow in L'Spa town centre very enbarasing and annoying (it was a busy day),but after going down to see Danny as I was getting a clunking noise every time I reversed and braked and the same for the first time braking forward. 30 mins later in Dannys knowledgable hands and it was cured until Saturday, will be going back down Monday to see what the problem is.

Didn't feel to confident after that so sold me remaining passes and drove miss Daisy home, bit disapointed would have been interesting to see how mine and Lee's would of compaired himself having the Tarox converion brakes with the bigger wheels and mine having standard wheels with the AP 4 pots, also to compare straight line acceleration both having RSD 210 conversion. Next time Gadget Next time.

:D :D

Besides from that a great day recommend it to anyone who was thinking about it but never, there were very different styles of drivers with various levels of cars from fast to manic fast but it was not intimadating at all out there everyone been very good at moving out the way to let faster cars through and people overtaking always giving a thank you wave. Excellent stuff hope to see you all again at any further track days.

The Robin Reliant with 210 bhp and 4pot brakes!!!

Duncan,

Glad to hear made it home ok.

I spoke to Tony about it afterwards, and its the first time like that has happened on one of the Ibiza's.

We are all a bit concerned though...and he and Danny will definitely find out what is causing it.

I hope it gets rectified real soon anyway, so that we can resume our battle on track!! :D

Take it easy mate!

PS: My Greenstuff has 4mm of pad left!!! They are buggered!!

EBC down to 4mm eh....
My Pagids are fine and dandy after Saturday. I know the EBC's would have been down to backplate by then.
The pad you want is Pagid Fast road 5051's.
you won't be dissapointed.
Combe was good fun and much better with the PSS9's this time :)

Duncan.
Glad you are Ok and nothing too bad damaged (save for some wheel bolts perhaps)
I have had the same thing happen to me on my Jetta and it is a scary moment. (not had them wobble off - but have had severe vibration and pulled off to find very loose wheel bolts)

The standard bolts are very short even on the stock wheels. I was aghast at how little thread engagement there was in the hub. Only about 8mm. My engineering training always said that you should have 1.5 x thread diameter engagement, which should be 12mm.

Do you torque your wheels (85lb/ft) before a track day and between sessions? This is always a good idea, as the hubs get a lot hotter on track then you can get them on the road.

Any of you guys take some times for your laps?

Bill,

They are indeed almost at the backplate!

I had Pagids before, and they maybe better on track, but for 85% of the time when i'm just driving around on normal roads, the Greenstuffs are great.

They are also much cleaner than Pagids...and i know this for a fact!

I'll have a think about it....but another set of Greenstuffs is more likely i think....unless there's a better pad out there that's as clean as Greenstuffs!

I'm gonna get Power Engineering to fit a boost gauge to see if my car is "overboosting" like others.

Catch you next time.

"cleaner than Greenstuffs" - They are brakes are'nt they> for stopping etc....
Washed regularly (as I'm sure you do) whats the difference.....

EBC's are only available in the wrong thickness pad... You are short changing yourself on pad material even before you turn a wheel. (15.6mm-EBC vs 19.6mm-correct pad).

"I had Pagids before, and they maybe better on track, but for 85% of the time when i'm just driving around on normal roads, the Greenstuffs are great." - driving on normal roads would be fine on stock pads also probably. Its the tracks which seperate the working pads from the "pretenders". EBC is hype gone mad.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.....
I'll stick with what "works for me".

Take care
all the best

Bill,

You said that the car was much better with the PSS9s on (And the 7.5"x16" wheels) and that you were about 7 seconds a lap faster than before, but thats still 2 seconds a lap slower than your Jetta... you also said that the Ibiza is definately the faster car, so, what in your opinion is holding it back?

Is the cars handling still a bit dodgy even with the PSS9s?

What spec is your Jetta anyway?

What else can be done to improve the Ibiza around the track?

BTW, you lot are a bunch of nutters around the track! Do you take out insurance for the track days (As normal insurance wont cover you)?

Cheers,
Ben

PS. Would locking wheel nuts prevent the problem that Duncan had with the bolt coming lose and the wheel nearly falling off???

The beezers handling is'nt dodgy at all now. It still rolls more than I want, and this is due to the spring rates in my opinion. Bilstein won't tell what their rates are, so this needs to be determined before I get harder ones. When I have the harder springs, I will be able to back off the damping a tad.
The difference between the Jetta and Ibiza now is braking. Not the ultimate stopping power of the brakes IMHO but the ABS making a right old mess of it. It is a road system which is overloaded on the track. It pumps up the pedal as it modulates the disks, which feels like glazed pads... the harder you press, the less is stops. This is extreme use mind you on track, and I could never get the same on the public highway.
Traction from the Jetta is aided also by a quaife ATB diff and Eibach front and rear anti roll bars and oly bushed suspension mounts. It has just over 200bhp from its 16v 2ltr motor and is a well developed motor over the last 7 years.
On the day, the Ibiza was only a second behind. Which impressed me. Only the PSS9's and 7.5x16 wheels were the difference.
I will be adding a little more negative camber when I sort out the spring rates I want.. It is only 1/4 degree at the moment. I run 1.75 degrees negative on the Jetta with no adverse tyre wear.

As for track insurance I have never had it and run at my own risk.

Hope this helps
