Got my new 2003 Leon TDI SE 110 on Sunday and went looking for some oil for top-ups (if necessary).

I was in Leeds for a couple of days so went to JCT 600 (official SEAT dealer) and they recommended the Quantum Synta semi-synthetic 10W40 stuff. It has the right spec according to the manual, i.e. meets both VW 505.00 and 500.00 but I've noticed since that there are also Turbo Diesel oils and they all seem to be 15W40.

Anyway, I bought the Quantum stuff because it was incorrectly priced on their computer at £7.50 for 5 (yes 5) litres. Will this do for any toppings up that are necessary before its first oil change?

Thanks,

Mike.

Sounds OK to me ~ I used Castrol Magnatec GTD - which was what the guys at Amethyst used to recommend.

This is also a semi-synth.

I've been using the Motul stuff, which I highly recommend. I used 6100 Synergie 5W-40 fully synthetic since the 1st change in the 110 and am now using the 6100 5W-40 -VW 505.01 in the Toledo.
The 505.01 being the standard for the TDI PD engines.

use the quantum RED (turbo diesel) or SYNTA silver (semi synth)

BUT if you have a pd engine

ONLY use the DEAR stuff from the DEALER trust me

YOU WILL regret it if not

Millers oil has just been granted VW 505.01 status for their oil called XFE PD, specifically for the PD engines. About £20 for 5 litres which is a lot less than dealer stuff (castrol). Only suitable for non variable service intervals.

The Motul stuff is supplied by my local Seat Dealer. As far as I know the Seat Dealers in Portugal use Repsol or Motul on the PD engines, VW/Audi dealers use Valvoline on the PDs.

Could get to sleep last night and started looking over the owners manual and found one big problem that I need to get figured out.

In the owners manual (under the oil section) says PD engines should use oil with the reference VW 505.01 only (no VW 505.00).

Up 'til hear no problem!

In a 10 page supplement to the manual it says that the PD engines should soley use VW 506.01 :(

Next paging through the service interval manual it say PD engines should only use the VW 506.01 oil :(

What the F@#k is going on hear.
I know the dealer has been using the Motul VW505.01 oil, but what if the VW506.01 oil is better? Called up the dealer, he didn't even know about the VW506.00 and VW506.01 references:mad:.
They stated that they where informed to use Motul or Repsol with ref VW505.01 on the PD's (aka Seat Alambra 115hp PD) and never got any service bulletin to switch to VW506.01.
How should I find out which one to use????

:gun: the dealer!!

Don't worry, this is the difference:

VW 505.01 is for PD engines requiring non variable service oil changes.

VW 506.01 is for PD engines requiring variable service oil changes.

The oil may be better but only over an extended period (up to 20,000 miles). If you change your oil regularly then 505.01 is fine. You will know if your engine is capable of variable services because on the data sticker there will be a code. Most SEAT cars do not have this facility, only VW and Audi as far as I know. So use VW 505.01.

Thanks Simon,
I haven't been able to find at 506.01 oil anyway:mad: .

My car does have the code!! but my filter/oil is changed a 15000KM intervals.

One more note: I get the strangest looks when going to the parts store asking for VW 506.01 approved oil, so PLEASE DO NOT TRY!
