View Full Version : Problem with VW group 1.8 20V Turbo engine.
I was told to come here as a lot of the Seats use the same engine. The one I'm talking about is the 150bhp version, which is also used in the Skodas. I'll apologise now for the lack of detail, it's not actually my car...
My dad has this engine in his Skoda, in his words "sometimes you put your foot down and it goes like the clappers, other times you put your foot down and it's very sluggish".
Any ideas?
It's not going to be lag as I think the turbo cuts in low down at 1750rpm.
Any help would be greatfully received! :)
probably down to temperature or hea sink, firstly they all go like the clappers when cold, so you cant judge them against this on a warm day when intercoolers, etc dont work as efficiently. secondly park your car up after a bit of driving, go out half an hour later, pop the bonnet and put yur hand on the inlet manifold( not the exhaust)is it any wonder when you see how hot this is that your car dosnt go right after being parked up a while, the heat soaks from everything that is glowing to all te cooler items under the bonnet and it takes 10 minutes of driving for everything to get back to normal again!

Tis true also on the density of the air... you'll find it quicker on cool wet days than hot sunny ones.
They pull like trains on rainy days when the roads are slippy but wheeze like old athsmatics when its hot and sunny and theres grip to be found on the roads. bizzare.
Unlike a normaly aspirated engine you don't always know what you will get when you floor it.
Although as you say the torque comes in at low revs you will still get better pick up from 3500 rpm to 4000rpm as the gearing will multiply the torque due to mechanical advantage and leverage..think accelerating your push bike in 5th gear as opposed to 21st gear.

Couldnt this be down to a dirty MAF sensor? I assume Aim is talking about getting the alternating performance in one journey ie. when the weather is the same...
I'm just guessing here. I'm no mechanic.
Hi, thanks for the replies so far.
As I say it's my fathers car, but I have asked him and he doesn't think that the weather makes any difference. He knows a car will run better when cold as engines prefer cold air to hot etc.
Someone from another foum suggested looking at everything in the engine, just to make sure that nothing was split. Thing is, I know my Punto's engine like the back of my hand, but not this one!
Any ideas what I should be looking at?
I guess if we can't see anything the best thing to do would be to get it bunged on the Skoda computer thingy, and see what that comes up with.
Thanks again for everyones help so far though, I know it's not a Seat so I know I'm being kinda cheeky asking for help!! ;)

No problem Aim. We like to consider ourselves an un-hostile site(!) and being a VAG engine they are pretty much the same throughout the group. As I said above I think it sounds like a dirty or faulty MAF sensor (air sensor) but I could be wrong. The best is probably as you said, to take it to a Skoda dealer where they will set it up on the VAG-COM diagnostic machine and should be able to pin point the problem.
By the way, we also have VAG and non-VAG discussion areas on this forum and consider ouselves a fairly nice bunch! We even have another Punto driver kicking around the site...
Another Punto? Hehehe, nice!
Something else he said is that when he's in stop start traffic it's worse, after a long run it seems to be better. I guess when it has a nice run it clears all the gunk out of it's bits and bobs.
I told him to get it booked in though, shouldn't be too much of a problem now as the Skoda dealer is actually in the same town, not 30 miles away anymore!!
