View Full Version : Exact differences between Cupra R and "normal" ??
Hi Guys,
who knows, or knows where to find the exact differences between an Ibiza Cupra R, and a Cupra ??
Something strange.. why is it possible to push the 180 hp engine to 210, just changing ECU, and 156 hp no more than 195-200 hp just ECU remapping ??
There must be then, something mechanical that changes, isn't it ??
I was told that those were the diffferences :
- brembo discs
- reinforced chassis (really ? what has changed ?)
- OZ Superturismo wheels
- suspension changed for what ?
- and 75 kg. lighter (?)
Well guys, I'd like some deep infos.. if someone can inform me / all of us, that would be great !!!
I'm also interested in datasheets..
Ok, see ya, and thanks,
Antonio.
It has a slightly different turbo too. Like in the Leon. Ask Zboyd ;)

About 6 big ones!
Ok, cool topboss :)
but can you explain them ?
and what are the "small" ones ?
thanks.

When you say its possible to chip the 180bhp engine to 210 easier - I think you mean with the 180bhp LEON engine - which runs a slightly bigger/different turbo I believe.
As far as I know the 180bhp IBIZA Cupra R engine and turbo are identical to the 156bhp car but for the ECU. The R hasn't got the Leon engine/turbo.
Oh yeah and its got a carbon fibre look engine cover ;)
So the Ibiza Cupra R can't be tuned any further than a normal 156bhp can, even though it has more to start with.
I think the Ibiza R is only worth buying if a) you can get a huge discount over the RRP and b) you are going to keep it bog standard, otherwise you might as well have bought a normal Cupra in the first place and saved yourself thousands.
The R has lowered uprated suspension (probably inferior to PSS9s though), a slightly wider track and 7x16 Oz alloys with 205/45 tyres. Also bigger 305mm brake discs and Brembo calipers (probably the most important improvement).
It also has basically trivial stuff like extra gauges in the centre console for boost pressure, oil temp etc... and minor cosmetic things like red seat belts (had them in my old 16V Cupra!)
Ok, thanks...
I just wanted to know, because over here, a guy was telling me cupra r was "good for money"... wich I didn't thought...
so, yes, you right, if you want to let the car without changing any parts, it may be good..
otherwise, a conversion like RSD, plus suspension kit like bilstein, is much nicer ;-))
and ... you can have it in Imperial Blue, or any other good colour !!! (not yellow ...)
See ya.
I think the "About 6 big ones" comment was refering to the price... an extra £6000!
As for why the 156bhp engine can 'only' be tuned to 195-200bhp just by changing the ecu whilst the 180bhp engines can be tuned to around 210bhp with an ecu change... this is probably because the cars with 180bhp engines (Leon) probably have bigger exhaust and other supporting systems to handle the power. The 156bhp engine can be tuned in exactly the same way but the smaller exhaust prevents the engine from producing its full power.
Also, people keep mentioning that the Leon has a slightly bigger turbo... is this really the case. The Ibiza has a K03 and I thought the next one up was the K04 which I'm pretty sure the Leon doesn't have... so I think the Leon has the same K03 turbo as the Ibiza. Not 100% sure though.
Ben
Wouldnt say they are bigger. Its just a different version of the K03, put the Ibiza and Leon turbo side by side on a bench and they look fairly similar, but i was told that the Leon or 180bhp version of the K03 has slight differences inside compared to the Ibiza K03.
But there is meant to be about 4-5 different versions of the K03 and also the K04.
Doesn't mean they are any less powerful, just they seem to have been designed differently for certain applications.
