As it says on the tin! Basically im going to hook a laptop into the car so it will play dvd's/games/mp3's/autoroute (cheap sat nav alternative) and vag com of course. Im planning to use a standalone screen run off the laptop by putting the screen where the vents (middle ones) are and the lappy bolted down somewhere. Then using a small keyboard bolted inside the glove box door, a ir remote control with built in track ball for mouse and an external usb hub and smart card reader mounted somwhere. I have all plans sorted but...........

Where do i run the cable from the line out of the lappy to the head unit???? I was planning on getting one of those little sony 50w amps that run off the head unit but was told this has no audio in, nor does the head unit. I was told the ONLY way is an fm modulator thingy for £45. Is this true???? Your help is appreciated

thanks

Sounds pretty good & if your only problem is the audio in - then that's good

PM Dormouse - he has one of these Sony Amps

The FM modulators are pretty naff at best when it comes to sound quality. Basically you'll get FM quality sound, surprise surprise! If you are planning to amp the whole of your system then a simple switching box could be made to switch between the HU and laptop.

, i was just thinking, (new concept) obviously the stereo has an audio input as im running the factory disc changer!!!!! So is it a possibility i could tap into that input by splitting it or getting rid of the changer or something??

cheers

Yes it is possible but may be harder than a simple switching box. Theres ususally some handshaking going on between the autochanger and the HU. For example if a autochanger isn't connect the HU knows this and so doesn't provide it as an option. Some are a simple a a signal tied high. If thats the case then it would simply be case of tieing that signal high and squirting the audio signal from the laptop into the HU. Yes it would be much neater but a service manual would be needed to determine the signal pins.

Not sure if this is any help, but its a USB > RCA Phono soundcard designed with laptops in mind.

Using this you could output straight to the amps using a better quality signal.....
