Is there any way I can replace the head unit in my 2002 Leon Cupra for a higher quality item, whilst retaining the original CD changer.

I've heard reports that the changer is made by Grundig or Panasonic. Would a head unit by one of these manufacturers drive the changer ?

As another idea, has anyone heard one of the small 4 channel Sony 'Sound On Top' amps ? Do they improve the sound from the standard head unit ?

they aint bad as standard , but

you can get panels to fill gaps when using a std din unit

BUT changer is for SEAT units only :(

the sony amp does wonders for the ibiza and a leon has better speakers so i dont see y not ?

NB if you ARE changin the head unit go for different amps as pre out will become an option

you'll be lookin @ £200 up to get one as good as a std unit

What is this Sony Amp?

Its a dealer supply unit that plugs inline out of the back of the existing head unit and the speaker cables then plug into the back of the amp.

Downside of this being it uses speaker level inputs so its not the best solution for quality as you are amplifying any sound impurities created by the amp in the head unit rather than running pre-amp which is the best for quality.

As Flapper says, the Leon Aura head units aren't bad for a factory fit unit. They are rated at 20w per channel, 80w total and the speakers are decent quality which makes a big difference.

Thanks!

I do like the steroe stuff alreafy oin the acr but it tends to lose it a bit with heavy bass at high volume - would the SOny AMp fix this or would new speakers be the way to go?

I'm in the same quandry with mine TBH. Like the look of the standard system but need more bass/volume/quality.

I'm probably going to stick an Alpine front end & changer in mine, as Zboyd has done this on his so I know an Alpine changer will go in the glovebox OK without too much work (just the front trim on the glovebox needs a minor mod)

speakers be ta best bet

i would most likely add a sub so it takes off pressure on the other speakers and you can have all the bass u w.....a......n....t.. then

damn beat :)
