View Full Version : Pug 205 GTi air filter
I have just been given a 1.6 205 GTi. It needs a bit of tidying up, but it didn't cost me anything so I am not complaining. When I went to buy a new air filter element from halfords, on the box it said that the new element should be 'saturated with engine oil' before being put in the housing. Is this right? Sounds a bit bizarre to me! It's got a foam element with a metal bit inside. Can anyone help? Toonman??!
Cheers
Steve
Could be wrong of course...but that sounds bizzare to me too
As far as I was aware you get:-
- Paper elements.
- Oiled paper elements
- Foam elements
K&N filters use (surprisingly  ) K&N oil.... which seems pretty much like parafin to me.
But what confuses me most....someone gave you a 205GTI?
Forgot to tell you the other day what ICM told me.
Mix 1/2 oil and 1/2 white spirit and coat the element in that. After a while the spirit will burn off, which is the idea!
By no means coat 100% in oil as it will clog the air flow!
Everyone at the car club says throw the whole air system away a put a 57i kit on - thats what they all do and most of them have thrown it away, hence difficult to get 2nd hand ones!
Hi Steve
Like Mik says, K&N need oiling, as do Ram Air (and no doubt a few others), but Std filters don't. Sounds strange to me, unless Halfords are doing some kind of cheaper alternative to K&Ns.
I'd check at your local branch.
Lucky S*d! No one ever gave me a 205GTI...;)
Good luck with it. Let us all know how you get on!

Yeah, he didn't have the time to MOT it and sell it so he said I could have it for nowt. It could do with new seats and stuff but I want to get the engine running right first. It's an early C plate so is the 105 BHP variant.
The halfords filter was exactly the same as the standard foam one, but it had this important note about flooding it with oil inside the box!
Cheers,
Steve
