I found a French web site where they tested a Clio 172 and the ibiza cupra. You might find the following link usefull, i was quite suprised by the figures for the cupra. Check out the performance of both cars in fifth gear.

I know it's hard to understand in French, but they do look good for the cupra, and they are unlikely to be bais with the Clio being French.

i see your model is listed as SPORT , our sport model looks just the same but only as a 1.6 or tdi

main difference i can see is the bumper , wierd huh ?

I'm not French, i'm from Wales, i was doing a search and came across that website. The model shown is a sport but they have tested the 1.8 20vt cupra. I think the french have just refered to the cupra as a cupra sport. Same type of think with Vauxhall they used to call their sports models 'sport', whereas opel used to refer to their sports models as 'Gsi'.

The car they have tested is the European version.

It is a 1.8t 20v SPORT.... and not the Cupra. The car is in essence the same however on the continent you can get the same car with two trim levels.

Cupra trim, which has the white dials (note the picture on the report), and with the Cupra body kit and seats n stuff..

Sport trim is as you can see it in the pictures. The cars have the same engines though.

In the UK the sport as flapper said is a 1.6 engine, and the only ibiza to have the 1.8t is the Cupra badged one.

I personally think the Sport version of the 1.8t from the continent looks sh*te.. the body work is gash and looks like a normal beeza (plain) and so looks like a lamb.. fair enough maybe a wolf in lambs clothing, but I prefer a wolf in wolves clothing thanks..

Glad the british market only has one 1.8t beeza.. :)

I know Car Magazine done a comparison between the Cupra and the 172 back in July / August. The Cupra came out smelling of roses. On the other hand Top Gear done a bit with that Vicky bird driving both and the only thing she liked was the boot opener

Hi,

Now, we have a french web site :-)

http://www.ibizacupra.fr.st/

Just take a look.

In France, wa have 2 models with the same engine. The Cupra and the Sport plus.

The "French" cupra is exactly the same as the "English" one. But the sport plus which is 20% less expensive looks like a TDI.

16'' wheels,
single exhaust (output) (I don't know how to say!)
No aluminium stuff inside the boot.
Brakes are not painted in red.
Some colors are not available (Flash red, blue imp ...)
No cupra badges.

....

Both has 156 BHP and the same weight.

another cool web site (in french)

www.topgti.com

It compare all the sport cars under 20 k

See you !

Well, just came home from the annual motorshow over here. Sat in both 172 and Cupra and i can tell you that the 172 made me feel  (sick). The car is quite small, plain and ugly. The beezer is lovely (can't wait until they will finally deliver mine), no doubt ;). I read all the posts telling that the handling of 172 is better, but i'd rather upgrade a new cupra instead of buying that ugly frog for nearly the same money.

If anybody says that Clios are nice, he is fired!

A mate of mine whom I founded the Renault Sports Club with a couple of years ago got the first Clio V8 Trophy in the UK as he is making wide boy body kits for it....now if you went in one of them I am sorry to say that you would cack yourself much more than the 210 biza and the 172.....he has had a 172 and killed it after a couple of months, he said that it was put on the market as a compromise to have a badged clio!

I am sure that the debate on the two cars will rage on but I would be loyal to the car that I have bought!

Hi,

We don't get any clio Turbo.... (exept turbo diesels one)

In France, we have:

Clio 2.0L 16V 172 BHP Which is named CLIO RS with the "Clio Sport" badge

Clio V6 240 BHP with the old French V6 3.0 24V at the back of the car. It has no rear seats.

Clio RS has a bad torque and is 20% more expensive than the Cupra.

The V6 cost 240 kFF -> 24 kŁ and car magazines said that the engine is not strong enough for the car. Renault will certainly develop a 280 and 300 BHP for this car.

See you !
