I'm putting an ABF engine with headwork,:D but standard cams in a mk2 golf. Now to make the most of it which is the best gearbox setup? I have 2 mk2 16v boxes, one crunchy in second the other jammed in 3rd, I'm also looking at a mk3 16v cable box. Most driving will be fast b/a road stuff with a few 200mile jaunts, I find the standard 5th in the KR box a bit low but like the acceleration through the gears, any ideas on a good combination that is not too low cogged for a daily driver, but gives good acceleration.

ta in advance:)

The Mk3 02A box has taller ratios (not got them to hand) but I think they're on me spreadsheet on my website.. here>> http://www.badger5.demon.co.uk/bin/gear-ratios.xls

Mine g'box and Robs is an 020 2Y 16v Mk2 box, with 3.94FD ratio on otherwise stock ratios.

Slightly more revvy on cruising and 1st gear is a bit short now. Accelerates well tho :)

Mk3 allows a 228mm clutch vs a 210mm one on an 020 box.
150bhp ABF motor would be better suited to a larger stronger g'box like the 02A.

68.82 59.01
102.28 86.87
130.01 110.70
159.84 137.16

020a on left and 2y on right the 020a is way too high geared, so how could I get good acceleration and a cruising top? just get a lower FD on the cable box? could a gearbox reconditioner mix and match the ratios?

the ratios in the seat 16v box look like vw mk3 8v ones weird

Give Alan White a call at Autotechnik. (02380 ******)
He is a whizz at gearboxes and what can be found ratio wise.

He does it all the time.

I'll get a light flywheel from them too to go with the new box, getting a new 16v project car on saturday, so keen to get started

I had my Ibiza 20VT clutch assembly done to upgrade to 228mm VR6 spec, and this used an ABF flywheel, very much lightened...
Great engine response... much lighter than the stock dual mass flywheel assembly.

Did Autotechnics do the flywheel? what weight is it, as I'm unsure how much to get taken off after having an aluminium flywheel on my mini, which was a little extreme.

I think 9lbs was removed...
If you can remember what an ABF flywheel looks like, the big bulge of metal on the rear face was machined off completely... leaving it looking like a disk.

Autotechnik did have it done for me yes.

Beware of VL Enterprise's deliveries.
I have heard of massive delays on getting work done there.
Good when you get it, but don't be in a hurry... Best to hand deliver locally as their mail order service was very long and delayed.
(as told me my one of my USA customers)

Bill I was just using their charts not their services

looks like an EGC or ELG cable box is similar to a 2y

and an AWY works out slightly lower than a 2y all round, (although second works out the same as a 2Y and top gives about 135 @7k on 15s)

Any ideas which cars had the above gearbox codes?

Worth checking against ETKA if it can search like that... (bill calls Flapper)

I did'nt think you were using VL Enterprises, just thought a caution was applicable for anyone that might. Forewarned is forearmed etc.. eyes wide open and all that. :)

Haven't checked through all of them but you can get a 4.25 diff, so possibly building a really low sprint box is an option.

I'll ask the vortex boys and let you know what i find

looks like those boxes are too new to be available for good money,

ELG New Beetle 1.8T
EGC Golf & Bora 2L 8V

AWY is a very weird one, was on Mk2 golf 1991-1992 1600 54Bhp, which I think must have been a detuned Cat equiped model we never got, maybe european or american!
ta to Andrew VW spares for that info

the DZQ cable change box tops out at 135mph has 24mm input shaft and 100mm flanges, it was in mk3 golfs but I don't know which one, looks ideal for trackday wise

@7000rpm, you get 29mph,52mph,81mph,108mph,133mph, bit low for the road tho! still haven't tracked down a decent cable change 2y type thing apart from those rare ones

also Bill do you know anyone selling 16v multispoke wheels?
