View Full Version : Tdi 130 Pd Test Drives

Just thought I would start a thread to help people like myself who are trying to find dealers who have an Ibiza 130Tdi Sport on demo.

As these cars are a little rare, if you know a dealer give them a little publicity and maybe we can help prospective new owners out!

All dealers should! Nothing worse than the salesman rattling on when you're trying to drive the car :)

Not wanting to go off topic too much...

I have a mixed bag on test drives. A Renualt dealer let me take out a 2nd hand Clio on my own, but the Subaru salesman came out with me in the Impreza (hmm! :D)

I got accompanied in the Focus TDCi as well. Premier have been very laid back - no pressure, no rush :)

We have two of the beasts here, one new demo and one used one in ovni.
On the subject of unnacompanied test drives,it all depends on the Dealers insurance as to whether they can give unnacompanied test drives,we do it occassionaly but it's not really the norm.

Tried both Thornes Wakefield and JCT Bradford today both their demo cars are not available because the salesmen they are assigned to are on holiday all weekend !!!

Why do dealers let their employees take cars out that are obviously in demand, over the busiest buying period of the week ????????

aaaaahhhhhhh - how annoying.

Frustration over I'm booked to drive one next weekend, so all's well could be ordering one soon.

I'm probably the worlds nerdiest test driver.
I don't rag the cars at all.

I listen for cabin noise and test the ride quality.
Just a simulated emergency stop and a simulated overtaking manouver from 40mph in 2nd and 3rd gears.

I dont do the door handle thing as I will have read wether a car has good or bad handling before the test drive and some garages have a "listen up" £2000 excess on demo drives.

Got a spare £2000 have you?

Toonman
18-10-2002, 21:55
Ooh er; never come across that before.

Last time I didn't, I got stuck with something that didn't suit and I'd sold it within 9 months...:(

Demo cars are there to be driven hard, so that potential owners can make their own minds up, not let others make the decision for them.

mark sheerin
18-10-2002, 22:09
They don't tell you that or you may not test the car and they may lose a sale;)

Ask before your next test drive you may be shocked.
It all depends how many previous demo cars have been pranged at each garage to what excess is applied by their insurance company...but I have definately heard of £2000.

Didn't know Thornes had a demo. How long are they letting you keep hold of it?

T'is the 100TDi you mentioned! Hopefully I'll get it for an hour or two. Salesman at Thornes showed me a 130TDi Sport they were PDI'ing around the back in RED - looked very nice (anyone on this forum got one ordered at Thornes ?). He said he had just sold one a couple of weeks ago to a guy who was chuffed to bits with it (presume that's you Mike!).

Anyway I'm still going to persue the one at JCT Bradford even though they said they would ring me back twice and haven't as yet.

How are you getting on with yours Mike, has the grin gone yet!!!!

No, but I'm struggling to find time to drive it just now, so still got less than 250 on the clock. I feel a trip to Scotland coming on otherwise I'll never get it run in.
I'm driving 500 miles a week in a 90bhp Mondeo TDI at the moment so every time I drive the 130 it's brilliant, but when I go back to the Mondy it's a total strain.
The PD100 at Thornes will be well run in by now so you can give it some stick.
I nearly bought one 'cos it was so good (plus it comes in white which I love - yeah I know it's sad!).

I feel a trip to Scotland coming on otherwise I'll never get it run in.

I was playing with AutoRoute today at work thinking about doing that.

Up to Fort William, then the magic roads upto Ullapool (via Strathcarron), John O'Groats, down to Edinburgh to see some friends and home again. 1400 miles and running it sorted on great roads and fab scenery.

The roads round Ullapool are the best roads I've ever driven on.

Definitely think a trip is in order when I get round to buying mine...

Just watch out for dopey sheep !

I took the Scooby up there last November.

Did 430 miles in one day alone. Was great driving - witness half a tank going in 60 miles (60 litre tank!) :D

Aceman...The salesman from JCT 600 Sticker Lane (Mick)was great.Very helpful, showed me the car inside out. Took the car along A roads and gave it some welly on the M606 and M62. However, on negociating a part ex price on my year old Ibiza 1.4, he had to keep reporting back to his manager. He told me that a TDI 130 would not be available for 12 weeks. In that time he was gonna knock nearly another grand off my trade in price.Wouldn't budge at all. So not only was I gonna have to wait for the car, but also lose out even more financially.Double whammy or what!? I found this unnacceptable as this was not my problem but I was obviously gonna end up paying for it! I decided to try elsewhere. Tried a place in Huddersfield who had a 6 week wait but said I wouldnt lose out on the part ex price. Ended up getting one from JCT 600 in Rawdon, Leeds. 2 week wait, same part ex price. JOB DONE! Pick it up next tuesday:) Mick rung me the following day to ask how things were. I told him I had ordered one and that his boss had cost him his commission.Felt sorry for him cause he sold the car,in my head at least.

Interesting! How can JCT justify such differences in deals from franchises only a few miles apart?, it stinks. This proves it is worth hunting round for that deal even within the same motor group.
Round one starts for me on Saturday will keep you informed.

Chri5B.... As I said in another thread, I could have had the Platinum Grey in 7 days! It was my first choice in colour.I ordered it, but a few days later saw a new Ibiza in Arctic Grey (the showroom only had the extreme blue on view) I loved it, and asked if I could swap the colour even though i'd already ordered. He said it might be a 6-8 weeks wait. He then rang me on the moby a few days later and said 2 weeks for an Arctic Grey one.God knows where he got it from? I'm sure they must all beg steal and borrow cars from each other for a sale.....

Excellent, you will have no regrets. I've been out playing in mine today it's brilliant fun.

Is glacier blue the same as the Ibiza inside the showroom at Thornes? I didn't like it on the brochure but in the metal it's really quite nice.

How long are they making you wait, and where are you getting it from?

aceman
26-10-2002, 19:26
The interior according to the brochure is 'Imp Red' so I presume it's the same but red fleks instead. I didn't get to test drive the one at Thornes as they rung me and left a message to say the car had a problem, instead I went to JCT @ Bradford of all people but still couldn't drive theirs as a customer had just bought it! (couldn't wait apparently). So after a bit of haggling I have bought one which is Iam told a cancelled order due in next month (November).

I'm just itching to get in it but it will be a nice suprise seeing as I haven't test drove one yet. Relying on testimonials from you guys!

Well don't worry like I say you won't be disappointed. I was after a Racing Puma for ages 'cos they are about 13k for a decent one now, which would have been really good fun and they look something special, but in the end I decided that in real world (where we all have to live unfortunately) and where I spend 90% of my time on the motorway the Ibiza was the sensible choice.

My g/f thought I was a bit mad buying a car I'd only seen once and never driven but it's all worked out fine (although as you know I did drive the PD100 first).

Have you got an insurance quote yet, at group 7 it's an absolute bargain for the performance. The immobiliser is CAT1 approved too so hopefully it should remain on your driveway without someone else 'borrowing' it.

On Thursday when I drove to work my computer readout was - miles 51, av speed 67, mpg 44 so once it's properly run in it should return closer to 48-50 mpg. Here's hoping.

Chri5B
26-10-2002, 20:00
Erm, daft question, but I must have missed the computer on my test drive.

Where does it live?

mikiew
26-10-2002, 20:23
It lives below the revcounter, but on your test drive was probably just a clock. You use a switch on the end of the right hand stalk to switch between the various read-outs.

Clock
External temp
Miles travelled
Average speed
Average mpg
Instantaneous mpg

Don't know if that order is right. It only holds in memory for 2 hours (between stops) or something, but there is also another memory that has slightly different functions over a longer time period, 9999 miles is the max I think. If you're driving a long journey then stop for lunch or something it will still be active providing that it's not over the 2 hours.

If you are interested I can look in the manual tomorrow, or maybe someone else will read this and advise. Basically it's the same as the VW computer as used on countless Golfs, etc. I had one in a Scirocco about 8 years ago, that also used to show oil temperature as well, although there is a separate guage for that in the Ibiza.

One of the Daves on the forum will be able to vouch for it's accuracy, too early to tell for me.

Chri5B
26-10-2002, 20:30
Ahhh, I remember there being a little rotary 'cog' built into one of the stalks on the right, assumed it was for variable wiper speed.

Cheers!

aceman...great news on the car:)Bet that month will go real slow for you. It'll be worth it i'm sure.Cool colour too! One point to make to you and all new SEAT owners. The alloys provided don't have locking wheel nuts fitted. Get some. Don't learn the hard way like me and wake up to a car balanced on bricks. This happened with my 1.4 ibiza a few months back. Because the nuts were covered, it never crossed my mind.( even my wifes crappy Daewoo Matiz came with locking nuts as standard)Don't give them any opportunity. Don't think it only happens to others. My new ibiza's gonna sleep in the alarmed garage at night, and wear a nice matching Stoplock Pro across its steering wheel whilst i'm at work. What precautions are you guys gonna take or recommend?

Chri5B
26-10-2002, 22:13
I'm spending £13,000 on a car and you don't even get locking nuts?

Cheers for heads up Tony! Much appreciated.

I've got a full size Discloc from the Scooby, hopefully that will fit the steering wheel on the Ibiza. I've also got one of the Halfords steering wheel locks that covers half the wheel from my Pug 206 GTI. That didn't fit the Scoob. I hope one fits, otherwise it's off down Halfords again

aceman
26-10-2002, 22:31
Thanks for the advice. I had already considered locking nuts and will fit some soon as it arrives, I may even fit two different sets to foil the 'tea leaves' as I read some years back that two different locks on each wheel is the best way to protect alloy wheels.

I wasn't too sure about the colour at first but after being shown a colour swatch by the salesman it's nearer silver than blue and reputed to be quite rare on the Ibiza.

Roll on November!!

Strange thing is the computer says that I have done 50 miles more than is on the odometer....I guess they reset it.

Accuracy, I think it is reasonably accurate, maybe 5-10% out. Difficult to tell because the one resets.

If you are planning on driving straight from filling up, press the button at the top of the filler, this allows you to use the expansion tank. I have done about 140 miles and the computer says that I have 300 miles to go. :-)

Chri5B
28-10-2002, 09:11
Expansion tank? That sounds handy. How much extra does it cost to fill up?

Just had a big shock (but a pleasant one!). The car will be ready for me to pick up on Thursday !!!!!!!

They, being JCT @ Bradford have sourced a Platinum Grey one which was my first choice anyway so I'm not complaining. Asked about the Road fund licence with it being the end of the month and he said he would stick an extra week on so I don't lose a month. They must be desperate for new registration this month but who cares, this has got to be some kind of record for a TDi - 5 days delivery!!!

Can't wait...........

Nice one Aceman that's excellent. It will feel like an eternity for Thursday to come round.

Thornes did the same for my tax too, I didn't realise you could do that until they told me. The disc actually says '12 months 1 week' (or similar) on the front. Good idea.

First impressions are good. Looks really nice outside in Arctic Grey, even if it is raining. Inside still looks as good as i remember from my test drive. Controls are similar to my old 1.4 Ibiza, so I know pretty well where everything is. Seats are comfortable. Not too firm or soft. Traffic heavy so pace is pretty slow. However, on the odd clear stretch I get the chance to push it a bit further. Whoosh! That kickback sure feels nice:) A smile comes to my face. I feel i'm gonna like this car! The sound system lets things down a little. It just doesn't sound right. It sounds cheap.I'd also prefer a bit more of the faceplate to come away as a security measure. After taking away the round bit, it still looks like a complete unit to a mindless dickhead thief. Mmm....May need to change it eventually. So, in the short space of time i've had it, i'm pretty well pleased. By the way, it DOES come with locking wheel nuts. (My old Ibiza didn't) and a Stoplock Pro Steering wheel immobiliser (cheapest at ARGOS at the moment fits PERFECTLY with no slack. If you got one on order lads, your'e in for a treat:D

aceman
29-10-2002, 19:00

Glad to hear it's as good as everyone is saying. Thanks for letting us know about the wheel nuts, at least they should be safe.

They do actually have this too, quite handy I reckon, not as good as rain sensitive wipers though.
