I have been wondering what grade/brand of oil people favour for their cars?

I changed mine for Mobil 1 at 4k, i did this to preserve the engine mainly and since 10k at the service interval it was changed to Castrol GTX Magnatec which the dealers use as standard. I get on very cold mornings a slight tap for about 10 seconds and im wondering if the magnatec is good enough for a cold winter, i know how its supposed to work but i know people who have used mobil 1 for 100k+ miles and have engines like new, whats everyones opinion.

Car is an Arosa 16v by the way,

Mobil 1 is an excellent oil. Unfortunately I can't use is because I need an oil with the 505.01 vw approval. I know Castrol has partnered up with VW, so it should handle the cold weather.
By the way if you use a lower weight oil, you probably won't hear the tapping as long. A 10W or 0W oil should give you good winter protection.
