1.2 Seat Ibiza won't start

My 1.2 Seat Ibiza 2002 has done 69K and has got some major issues. It was fine till the other day it did start with difficulty and drive but only if you gave it loads of revs. The engine made loud clanking/gurgling noises and cut out after a few mins. I got it home eventually but now it doesnt start and the battery has gone flat....and no, its not under warranty. Anyone know what to do to fix this car?

well im not sure about the loud clanking/gurgling noises, but for a flat battery sounds like your alternator has packed up

posible timing chain slipped

Sorry I hope I'm wrong, but I'll third that - and it's not good - not very good at all. I would have thought that all cars still within the dealer service loop would have had modified parts fitted by now, if you are outwith the dealer service loop then I'd expect if you were getting the car serviced by an indep VAG specialist, then if they did not warn you about this that is not too good, if you service the car yourself then its up to you to make yourself aware of any "new" problems and take corrective action. Either way sounds like your wallet is about to be crunched!

I take it you killed the battery from trying in vain to start it ??

As others have said, the no1 cause of this kind of thing is a timing belt tessioner failure, the chain then jumps teeth, one or 2 at first and that makes the engine tough to start and a bit sluggish to drive. When the chain jumps too much you end up with valvs smashing into pistons and a bill for £1k pluss unless you have a warrenty

Good luck, you're going to need it

I think there is more info in the mk4 FAQ bit

i had a belt jump years ago, the RAC man told me if it wont start in the first couple of seconds, turn the key off and try again

keep on cranking the key for long periods of time is bad news as the fuel pump is whacking in more and more fuel and it's not being burnt due to no firing.

i ended up flooding the engine (something i didn't think was possible with fuel injection :s )

sounds a big job if it is a slipped chain, hope you get it sorted :)

Stu, was it an Audi V6 engine that you flooded - I did that a few months ago - 2.8V6 Passat, in the end needed preheated plugs + a little oil down each bore + AA starter pack! (Root cause was the changing of fuel filter with a cold engine - happens a lot with Jag+BMW+VAG Vee engines - if you do it with a hot engine the residual heat vaporises the excess fuel and you get off with it, with a cold engine it ends up washing the oil (seal) out of the rings so compression is lost!) You live and learn.
