1.9 TDI PD timing belt change intervals

Conflicting evidence out there regarding recommended service life of PD timing belts. Autodata recommend 40k miles or 4 years, Tecdoc data supplied by Contitech (who are OE supplier of belt to VAG) recommend 90,000kms. Word on the street suggests VAG have bulletined dealers to change at 40k miles or 4 years. Local dealer says 4 years or 60k miles, local VAG specialist also says 60k miles or 4 years.
Any factual evidence not hearsay appreciated!!

iv got a 2004 tdi 130 and my service book says that the timing belt only needs changing after 80000 miles now after reading this and the fact that my car has done about 59k and is four years old does this mean that i should have the timing belt replaced or not as the book states 80k but has no mention of timescale at all?????

Change period is definately 60k or 4 years. Fit new water pump as well, VW also do exchange pumps (just as good and with full VW guarantee) and cost about £35 exchange. ICME labour time is 2.9 hrs for changing the belt/tensioners so 3 and a bit hours should cover it. Don't scrimp, if it aint done right the engine damage will make you wish you'd paid to have it done properly!!

Cheapest VAG dealership to use is Skoda, I'm not proud! Besides running Seats we also have Skodas in the family.

Yeah, its worth shopping around, I usually go local for convenience. It would be a git to get stuck without the car 100's of miles from home if something unexpected were to come up.

booked in with specialist vag garage for tuesday replacing the water pump same time £300ish inc vat
Hi I was quoted £600 from Seat dealer in South London this did not include the water pump when I complained at the pump being extra they said we will throw it in .
I got a quote from a local garage for £285 including water pump But told me that these belts last for 70k miles but they would take my money if I insisted. Flagging up changing the belts so early may have been an added value ploy by some one at Seat.

Nobody at seat would coment but just repeated a mantra saying it was policy.:censored:[:@]
