Oil...What to use in your TDI

prc

Sooty Meister
Have seen quite a few posts regarding what oil to use, so I've posted this sticky to help out (even though it's in the TDI FAQ  ). Since I not very familiar with what's available in the UK, I'd appreciate it if you guys would post up what's available.. :)

As far as VW Approvals we basically have 3 for Diesels:

VW505.00

Basically for all of the older diesel (read non-PD) diesel engines:

1.6 & 1.9 D/TD/SDI/TDI90/TDI110 & 2.5TDI & 3.3TDI

VW505.01

For Diesel PD engines:

1.4TDI & 1.9PD's (115/130/150) & 2.0

VW506.01

As above but for variable service (extended range servicing).

As for actual oils that meet the above standards, most oils are 505.00 approved so no problems there. As for other oils, here are some off the top of my head:

VW505.01

Motul Spec 505.01
Shell VA 505.01

VW506.01

Motul Spec 506.01
Castrol SLX II Long Life

Also Castrol have one called "Castrol 505 01"...this is what my local VW dealer stocks, and what my car currently uses.

My PD130 is running 506.01 spec oil in it, and I have been advised by our favourite Skoda Master Technician that this shouldn't be a problem as long as it is changed at SEAT's recommended service intervals.
