Eicher Discs and Pads - Any good ?

During my recent MOT, I was told that rear brakes binding a tad and the discs have a slight dis-coloration which implies they have been hot.

So, took off the wheels for a look see and found that the pads are solid in the carriers, had to knock them out with a hammer and a blunt screwdriver.

With a bit of emery cloth and a dab of copper ease they are now back in, not ideal but better than before.

So, I am now looking at replacing them, discs and all..

A quick call to ECP produced 2 prices for discs and pads, £80 all in for Pagid and £40 all in for Eicher.

I am not after anything special, just something that compares to stock discs and pads, and was wondering if anyone has any experience of Eicher ?

Obviously, brakes stop you so are important, but the rears on my Tolly keep rusting up and have to be replaced every other year, so I was just wondering about the cheaper Eicher option ?

Any comments guy's ?

Thanks.

Eicher are very cheap, and I've read a few people don't rate them over well. I believe they're a ECP own brand which would tell me they're pretty crap.

Have you considered genuine parts from the dealers? Guaranteed quality and warranty, and I got the rears for my Altea for £70. Maybe give David at Sere a ring and see what price he can do. For the money, I'd steer clear of Eicher simply for the reason you gave (brakes stop you).

Put these on the front of mine, the pads 'clonk' about in the caliper very annoying! Not a lot wrong with the discs through.

When I did the rears I got ebc pads off ebay and the eicher discs from ecp.

Thanks for the replies guy's..

After calling back ECP for some more information, it turns out that the Pagid option (£80 all in Discs and pads) is not actually in stock..

They tell me Eicher are ok for normal use, especially on the rear.

I wouldn't be considering cheap Eicher discs and Pads for the front, no way !!

£40 all in Discs and Pads does sound extremely cheap though, and I do wonder if they will do just fine for the rears.
For 99% of the time I am the only ocupant of the car so I guess the rears don't actually do much?

I tend to wash my car most weekends, so I do suffer with pads stuck to discs when I drive off on monday mornings, so I reckon this is why I end up replacing the rear discs and pads at every other MOT when I get an observation.

So question remains, Eicher or not Eicher on the rear of my Tolly ?

I guess I pays my money and takes the choice ;-)

The rears on your car do most of the work to be honest. Unlike many manufacturers who bias the brakes to the front, VAG use a system where for normal day to day driving the rears are biased to be used. Under heavy braking the fronts take over, but for normal driving about town etc. you'll find the rears wear much quicker than the fronts.

Seriously though, I reckon David will surprise you with the price of genuine stuff.

Thanks Viking, do you have contact details for David?

As another option, I just called GSF, but unfortunately I don't have a local branch so it will be Saturday before I could get to them..

GSF standard stuff is £9.95 +vat for a rear disc and £12.50 + Vat for pads, guy said VTech brand, again they said good enough for rear. £39 all in, very similar price to ECP Eicher.

I then asked for better quality option and he said £13.60 + Vat for a rear disc and £19.35 +vat for pads, guy said Brembo, which I have heard of. So £55 all in for those.

So, middle ground I reckon, trip to GSF on Saturday, Brembo discs and pads £55, can't really go wrong can I ?
I am sure they aren't the top notch Brembo's that I see refered to on these forums, but at least they are a recognised brand, so the quality must be better than Eicher, Vtech or the cheaper stuff.

I will contact David as suggested though.

Thanks Guy's, great help..

Interesting, never heard of that... so the pad wear indicators on the front are useless if you drive mostly around town, and don't hoon around too often (as motorway/A road trips should not see the brakes used much unless you're out for a fun drive). Matter of fact, now that I think of it, when I had the pads on mine changed both the front and backs were done...

When dealing with brakes I would buy the best you can afford, at the end of the day its the only thing that tops you!!!
