Oil...What to use in your TDI

Moonlight

Guest
A quick question I have is: I have topped up my Cupra TDI with a castrol 506.01 approved oil as stated in the handbook but obviously dont know what the original oil in the car is. Is it ok to do this potentialy mix oil brands? (I though it would be ok as its just a small ammount).

It will be fine to top up with in small amounts. Just keep it to the occasional top up though.

Cheers

Simon.

Ok Thanks Simon. :)

from my understanding

506.1 PD synthetic
505.1 non PD syn

505.00 is the non PD (but could be synthetic or not)
505.01 is PD (non variable servicing) all I've seen are synthetic based with some mineral parts. NOT SEMI-SYNTHETIC which is mineral based with some synthetic molecules.
506.01 is PD synthetic for variable servicing.

Just to save any confusion.

Volkswagen Group Oil Specifications and their Applications

VW 500.00
This is an “old” oil specification and is applicable to engines built before model year 2000 (up to August 1999)
Viscosity ratings: SAE 5w-40, 10w-40 or 20w-40
This oil can be used in all petrol and some diesel engines, apart from those referred to under other specifications.

VW 501.01
This is another “old” oil specification with exactly the same application as
VW 500.00.
Viscosity ratings: SAE 10w-40, 15w-40 or 20w-40

VW 502.00
This oil can only be used in petrol engines and is recommended for those which are subject to arduous conditions. It must not be used for any engines with variable service intervals or any which are referred to under other specifications.
Viscosity ratings: SAE 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40

VW 503.00
This is a relatively new oil specification for petrol engines with variable service intervals. It includes the AUDI S4, but not the RS4, or the TT and S3 with outputs of more than 180bhp.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VW 503.01
A new oil specification specifically for the RS4, and the TT and S3 with outputs of more than 180bhp, Passat W8 and Phaeton W12.
Viscosity rating: 0w-30

VW 505.00
For all diesel engines prior to model year 2000 (August 1999)
Viscosity rating: 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40

VW 505.01
For all diesel engines with unit injectors (Pumpe-Duse or PD) without variable service intervals.
Viscosity rating: SAE 5w-40

VW 506.00
For all diesel engines except those with unit injectors, with variable service intervals.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VW 506.01
For all diesel engines, including those with unit injectors, with variable service intervals.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VAG cars can get a littl confusing when it comes to oil as they do every thing by codes.

Have another look in the hand book and it will give you a list of codes, it will look a little like VW505.01

Let me know what the code is and I will forward on to you some options.

Cheers

Guy.

it says:

Diesel Engine:
denomination Specification Comments
A - Synthetic oil VW 505 01 dated after 1-97
B - mineral oil VW 505 00 dated after 1-97
a/b - Multi-grade oil ACEA B2 or B3 or even API CD/CF dated after 1-97

on A - synthetic oil, it says:
"Diesel engines that have fuel injection based on a fuel injector pump should ony use oil specification 505 01. avoid the use of any other oil type then VW505 01 for this engine.

so whats mine, as a 53 110BHP Diesel Toledo

If you have a PD Diesel engine then you can only use PD specific oil which meets the VW505.01 spec, if you do not have the PD engine then you can use any oil thatr meets the 505.00 spec, and there are plenty to choose from.

Plenty to choose from on my site here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Drop me a mail for a price list.

On the 505.00 code you can go 10w-40 semi synthetic or 5w-40 full synthetic.

The full synthetics are the quality option, I would look at the Motul 8100 excess 5w-40 as this is a good quality syntheitc.
