EML - need help

Any help on the topic below would be much appreciated:

A few days ago I was driving home from work (motorway) and the EML came on. First thought...S*it.
Did not notice any difference in the performance of the engine nor any strange noises, so decided to carry on.

When got home switched off the car and switched it back on... light was still on!

After a couple of hours went out again and decided to reset the mpg stats. After a couple of minutes the light switched off!

The only thing that was changed in the car recently was the restricted EGR gasket (3 weeks ago) but have never had the EML before.

When the EML came on I had been driving slowly for about 18 miles (due to the bad weather). Would you think this triggered the ECU to think that the flow of recirculated gases was not enough?

Has any one had this experience before?

PS: car is an FR TDI 50K miles

Cheers

I fitted a restricted EGR gasket recently which brought up the EML light (P0401 code)...

Im going to remove the gasket today and see what difference (if any) it makes.

Did you notice much benefit from the gaskets? I didnt own the car for long before fitting them so Im unsure what (if any) difference it made

Fraz, fitting the restriting EGR gasket on mine made a huge difference, as I was suffering from engine stuttering, and it completely stopped after fitting the gasket.

After removing the gasket the EML went off, but the stuttering is back!

Turning down the EGR via VAGCOM made the same result has fitting the gasket, but because I don't have the licensed software, the changes are not saved and when I restart the engine the settings are reset.

Why everything has to be hard?...
