Speaker Rivets

Hi all,

I will be replacing the dead door speaker on my Leon shortly with another stock speaker taken from another Leon. However, when I come to fit new the rivets upon speaker re-fitting, does anyone know the correct size/dimension rivets that I need?

Hahaha good to know I'm not the only one! After some searching earlier, Google suggests that Skoda's use 6.4mm x 10mm rivets on their door panels when attaching all the ancillaries. Even though Skoda is part of VAG, this will need clarifying weather VW/Seat also use the same size rivets for the door panels.

Quick update,

Managed to successfully install the replacement speaker today with the new rivets. As my step Dad had soo many of them in difference sizes, we just used some that were a bit smaller in diameter than the speaker hole in the speakers and they went in without a problem.

I had a quick measure up of the old rivets and to me it does look that the old ones used are roughly 6.4mm x 10mm as I stated in my last post.

However, I've thought of this from the start and I will state it now - why VAG decided to use rivets to secure the speaker in place on the carrier plate is beyond me, and to me it seems a bit of a poor design as each time new rivets are put in place, it puts pressure on the speaker casing (which is only plastic!) and therefore can cause the plastic casing to crack - which happened on 2 of the speaker holes while fitting the new rivets in place. Also after taking the old knackered speaker out, I noticed that 3/4 of the speaker holes had been damaged due to the old rivets. Most of all though, because VAG use rivets - it makes it a pig of a job to remove & replace the speakers!!

My thoughts entirely. In my early driving days when I used to have Fords, everything was simply bolted/philips screwed together.

It's made me think of possible situations of when Seat ever used to have warranty claims that involved changing anything on the doors i.e. failed window regulators besides the speakers - I wouldn't be surprised if they just completely swapped the ancillaries carrier as everything is riveted together
