Roach do you have any resistors left? Xanax can the red/black cable just be cut?

Sorry didnt reply roach been on nights. But got some now anyway. Quick question about cable anyone. Cant find 10a cable, seen 11a on a quick search. Is this suitable considering the high speed fan runs at 15a. To me I should need higher than 15a?

Can I add why do you think the water pump is faulty surely the high speeds was working before hand as you say and not after if the water pump was faulty it would want to overheat causing high speed fans to be on more surely....my low speeds was not working at all not even with air con and my high speeds seems to be pulsate and rather loudly aswell the new fans have now cured my problem... I can get the high speed fans on just by leaving it ticking over for around 30 minutes my liquid gauge shows around 94oc once the fans comes on...

Sorry Mark for the insanely late reply

I'm only suspecting the water pump as my high speed still don't come on even with some heavy motorway blasting then sitting and letting it idle on a local road, temp gauge has never been past 90, takes about 10mins from cold for it to start rising slowly but still it never goes past 90, could my coolant system be top notch? god knows!

Found an old service receipt which showed cambelt change last year, called the guy up who remembered the car as he only works on veedubs and this was his first seat in a good couple of years, also the car has 165k+ so not hard to miss! He confirmed the last owner only asked for the cambelt to be changed not the water pump...as you do :banned:

He mentioned a quick test seeing if the coolant was coming out of the res pot or something or letting the car idle and gently squeezing one of the rad pipes (taking care here because of the fans and general engine shenanigans!) then get someone to blip the throttle and you should feel the rad hose expand, if so then the water pump is working fine, unfortunately I've only got one set of hands here so will try that some time

In the meantime the above mod has cured my slow speed fan working once air-con is switched on which it never did before, I thought my high speed fan was working when out and about but when I reported that I had only had the car for a couple of days so still getting used to noises/rattles/squeaks and general seat owning kinda stuff

If I get a chance I will double check the disconnected fan plug multimeter readings as described in the original link, time is not on my side at the moment so in the meantime as my slow speed fans work with air-con I switch that on when sitting in traffic or as needed

In other words, some fan movement is better than none in traffic...

The high speed fan only comes on at 106c according to my liquid gauge, and since I've fixed the slow speed fan I've never had the coolant temp once go into triple figures so far, that includes some hard driving with the recent hot weather we've been having, as long as the needle doesn't go past 90 I wouldn't worry about it tbh.

Does the OP fix work for normal LC's? I notice its been done on a LCR for the purpose of this thread. My slow speed fans dont work and am looking to sort it out via whats been said in this thread providing the wiring is the same.
Cheers

Exactly the same buddy.

Yep as above, it originated for a Golf (not sure which spec but mk4 I believe) and was used for a LCR, I like many have used it for a TDi, so aslong as you have climate control and two fans upfront then this works

All the pics you need for doing it with the LCR and dirty pump are in this topic, what you will find is its pretty much in the same place for both so should be the same for all mk1 leons

This is me next weekend :(

Previous owner replaced the fans before I took it off him to fix this problem but they've gone again, within a month of having them replaced.

Going to have to try this solution as I'm not buying another fan for it to go wrong again!

Also need to check thermostat plug as suggested in here and fuse although I don't think these will be faulty as replacing the fan last time fixed the problem (resistor is built into fan).

Did this yesterday morning and worked a treat! Thought I was going to have to buy a new fan unit! :D
